Worried for your safety

the-smiling-buddha I am going to need something more than a file, I am pondering attack the brake mounts with a dremel, I'd hate for it to slip though and mark the stays, so I'll probably wait until I have bought a proper bike stand,so I can work on it properly

The trick here is to put zero pressure on the dremel, don't push, let the dremel do the work - but to be safe wrap the area around where you are doing your surgery with thick duct tape.
