Fixing top tubes

jv yeah might try some of that spray stuff on the saddle cheers. dont really want to put a cover on it.

should of been clearer the stem is loose in the tube, not the bars. if i hold the front wheel between my feet and twist the bars firmly the stem moves round - not cool

Not cool indeed - can't think why that would be (unless Shimano made french size stems which seems unlikely. You could check with calipers and it should be 22.2mm). You tried tightening it a bit more :)
