Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde - they just don't make hip hop like that anymore.
...or do they? I am old and the new music I'm exposed to is generally guitar based. Anyone got any hip hop recommendations?
Was also listening to the Jazzy Jeff Hip Hop compilation album (name escapes me) but it's all old skool stuff. But worth a listen.

There was a Breakin Bread compilation earlier this year that was very good. But other than that I don't hear much new stuff that excites me.
+1 to the Rawkus stuff, will check out Big L & the rest. Bit of a blind spot in my hip hop knowledge (mainly when I was a chippy indie kid who thought that Carter USM was better than Public Enemy. Proof - if any was needed - that teenagers don't know sh*t).

Fatlip's 'Loneliest Punk' album is an effective missing link between the Bizarre Ride and modern hip-hop. It got woefully neglected but has some great tracks on it

Yeah! I have beeen pumping up the old 80's mega mix a lot over the last week.

The vast majority of modern hip hop is trash. Some good stuff comin out of Atlanta now and again but also A LOT of crap. Lil Wayne is good. new Capone and Noreaga sounds pretty good.
That band The Cool Kids sounds alright despite the terrible name, more of an 80's old school vibe and Plastic Little same thing there from Philly i think.
Big L, awesome but dead
Kid n Play, totally agree
EPMD, awesomecurently listening to a lot of the late 80's cold chillin stuff big daddy kane, kool moe dee etc. All definatly worth checkin out.
