talking of wheel building...
How do you measure a spoke? Is it the whole length including the bent bit or is top/centre of bent bit to the end of the thread?
Also, does anone know where you can get a cheap tension meter? Those park tool ones seem f**king expensive for what they are! -

ChrisNW There's no reason your wheels can't look a bit different without radial spokes.
I just built two wheels up this week, my first wheel build and it went okay.
Took my time, allowed an evening per wheel and just used the bike frame/forks to hold wheel while truing.Front: 36h 3 leading 3 trailing.
Rear: 36h 3-cross crows foot.I would say the crows foot was easier to do, and it feels so solid. I used ACI spokes too.
No pics yet.
Pics now available:

Which calculator setting do you use to calculate spoke lengths for a crows foot (is it same as 2 cross)?

sorry JOL I kind of whish i could build my back wheel that weekend too.. but i also need to go to newcastle to get the rest of the bits for the bike..

Sorry, this will prob post twice...
Crows foot: for 36h rims I used 24 3-cross + 12 radial spokes. By using 3 cross spokes you get a wheel that transfers the torque better that 2 cross. This meant I had to overlap the 'toes' of the crows feet. It still looks pretty neat on the bike with a 6 pointed star effect around the hub.
Another for the wheelbuilding meet. I need to buy spokes still but got everything else so i guess i'm on course to be ready for next sunday. How about we meet at polo?
