I rode with a s/s bmx hub when I first got my bike. Personally I felt like I was doing it by halves (ie if I stopped eating meat I'd just go straight to vegan) but fixed isn't for everyone. When I got around to having new wheels built I used a flip flop hub but I really have never used the freewheel since. Once you're fixed you won't go back. Also I reckon flipflop hubs are harder to find - esp if you have a dumb spoke count like me (28).
I never tried anyone else bike before I rode fixed (same reason - too big for me) - my bike is usually the very tiniest at polo if you want to try it :D
