I don't cover mine but use Nickwax to proof the leather. This has worked very well in the wet. I do now need to tighten it, not that this is a problem (anyone got a Brooks spanner, save me buying one?).
It's the Swift titanium so it doesn't way much either. They are pretty £££, but no more expensive than, say, the Fiz:ik equivalent.
It goes with my Brooks bar tape and generally the new / old look of my bike, which is a main reason for me buying it if I'm honest. Plus I like the idea of buying from a good, independent and traditional British company (please tell me this is still true!).
I think this is why people like 'em. Much like why people will buy a classic retro style bike over something modern but more technologically advanced. Yer pays yer money & takes your choice.
