  • Another vote for the sbc Toupe, I don't know of any other saddle that so many folk find comfortable.

Those Endura undershorts are pretty pap (basic/crap foam pad + hot, sweaty not very breathable material) , Sugoi or Pearl Izumi undershorts are far better quality but are abour 30 quid.

  • nimhbus: trial and error dude. Some shops let you test ride saddles for a week.. well in Oz they did. Borrow spare saddles off mates and ride 'em a long way.
Basically, I liked Flite saddles and rode them for ages but decided I wanted to try some of the newer Selle Italia stuff. This involves shelling cash out on ebay saddles (half rrp or less) and riding them. If you don't like, put them back on ebay. You like you keep. I know not everyone has this luxury but it worked for me. SLR has a cheaper XP option for example but some numpties pay over the odds for it thinking "XP" = better. Just know what they go for and don't pay over the odds.
Also I used to shuffle through the old stock bins in bike shops looking for saddle bargains. I had another vague-arse point but I've lost it.. oh that's right.. try to narrow down the SHAPE of the saddle that seems more comfortable and then refine your choice on that. I found flatter saddles like the Flite and SLR were much better for my butt than those rounded-at-the-sides San Marco Rolls style..

  • +1 for Spec Toupe, great saddle, really comfy and I think it looks good. You can get red too if you go for the team version.

  • Object17 Smear, You know I don't eat egg.

maybe i was trying to posion you?

back on topic though, have you messed about with your stem yet, that makes massive differences to your bumbum position, has any one mentioned that yet?

  • back on topic though, have you messed about with your stem yet, that makes massive differences to your bumbum position,

what you get up to in your spare time, sir, is no concern of ours.

  • Anyone else got any input on the Rolls?
There's a sweet blue-ish one on ebay that would totally make my steed gagtastic.

Off topic (maybe I should start a new one: hmmm...)
Any ideas where to get an anodized seatpost in an awkward 25.4mm? Blue would rock, but red would do...?

  • Pretty much any BMX seatpost ever is 25.4. Check cyclesportbmx.co.uk or crucialbmx.com for pretty colours.

If they have nothing then http://www.winstanleysbmx.com stocks "all the brands" - though their customer service is horrific.

  • rolls are OK, relatively hard even though lots of padding.

  • dogsballs rolls are OK, relatively hard even though lots of padding.

And you get to tell people "I'm taking the rolls out"

  • used to have a Rolls Due saddle on my ride for a couple of years. a bit thinner than the regular Rolls. it was a brilliant saddle. i like the regular Rolls and have used a couple but they are just a bit on the big side.

  • Don't BMX seatposts have wierd saddle fittings? Or none at all?
    Wtf is with that?

They used to but now you get a lot with microadjusts on them

  • fizik arione is an awesome saddle, i use it on my track bike
top-of-the-line ti-railed specialized toupe is also an awesome saddle (if you have the money), i use it on my road bike.

in both cases, i've spent about 100miles or 5 hours straight in the saddle, with average cycling shorts, and not have a huge comfort problem

  • andrewleitch86

I never did the BMX thing, so assumed their saddles were held to the bizarre fittingless posts by some kind of crazy black magic. Now I'm in with a chance of finishing spending more money on my bike.
    Huzzah! (and, thank you.)

  • I'll add my vote for the specialzed, I've only got the Alias, one down from the Toupe (cheaper too) most comfortable thing I've sat on, thinking of one for my lounge chair

  • I found the rolls was brilliant for the commute, but I discovered after last year's Dynamo that it's not quite so rosy on a long haul.

I'm currently rocking a B17 Champion which I'm considering chopping...

  • Toure is a beaut, loved it around town but rode it to brighton and far too much flex after a long while, fine if your not riding fixed, where you can subtly adjust your seating position and then continue pedalling but everytime i'd get it just right i'd hit a bump and it'd knock me out of the loop again. i lasted about 30 miles before it started to hurt. Also they are very delicate and £80 so you have to be careful when flipping your bike upside down to change your wheel. Cracked mine after 3 months, its on my second bike now. Oh yes and if you have any kind of hole in your jeans the little wings at the back slice them open when you slide on. I tiny hole that had been their for years turned gaping as the lights went green. I also have an Alias which is the younger / cheaper brother, thicker, stiffer, 150 times better saddle, although i havent ridden it past 30 miles yet. Bought that in Condor, wanted the toure and the guy, (S.A, Boer, dutchman) really helpfully insisted that it would flex too much for a fix. Ended up buying both a couple months apart cause that toure is so frikin sexy... but the man was right i now look at wingflex longingly.
Also i bought some condor gel shorts, kept thinking i had lady ones...not much good for the back bottom.

  • I found the bog standard saddle on my old langster pretty comfotable.

  • Must be the time of year or summit, but my left nut's aching something awful.

Fairly sure it's not saddle related as I've been riding my oldest (longest owned) bike for the last couple of weeks.

I'm doctoring it tomorrow as wife does want sprog mk II at some point...

  • Evilmonkey I'm doctoring it tomorrow as wife does want sprog mk II at some point...

Get the wife to have a look at it. Nothing a little attention can't heal.

  • If you're after a bargain saddle that's fairly comfortable and light, try the "Charge Spoon".
I bought one after I saw it recommended in a mountain bike mag. About £21, comes in black or brown.
It's comfy enough to ride my commute 3 or 4 times a week (18 miles each way), although I do wear padded shorts too.

  • yeah, i looked at the charge, it's nice looking. wondered if it wasn't a bit on the cheapie side though, but if you say it's good, it might well be worth a go at that price

  • I've been having hassle with the new bike. I played with position and think its really close to the old one now. Lots of fiddling and I still hadn't been able to engage the sit-bones properly. I tried 3 different saddles, adjusted my stem up down forwards back, saddle forwards back etc. (I made the mistake of dismantling the old bike without measuring anything..)
I have now realised my 'discomfort' is due to new riding clothes: wearing padded undershorts + 3/4 shants with a thin sewn-in pad = too much padding.
It was fine for a few days, but the cushioning reallly hurt today!

  • HTFU!! or sell me the bike ;)

  • yeah-yeah.. Not all of us have 'taints' hardened by years of systematic abuse. ;-)
