  • i too am needing a saddle for the new bike. considering the toupe, as i have an old BG saddle, and i know it's probably gonan be the most comfortable out there. However, i wanted a colour other than black or white. I've heard the brooks take forever to wear in?

  • any leather saddle is the way to go! anyway, nothing wrong with padded knicks. but just for 7miles? shouldnt really matter. i only wear pads on 50+kms. try padded mtb short firstly if you're not comfy with the skin tight sexy look.

    or

heard there's plenty of give in these http://www.wiggle.co.uk/ProductDetail.aspx?Cat=cycle&ProdID=5360014487&n=Selle%20San%20Marco%20SKN%20Titanium%20Saddle or http://www.wiggle.co.uk/ProductDetail.aspx?Cat=cycle&ProdID=5300005905&n=Selle%20Italia%20SLK%20Gel%20Flow%20Saddle

  • Richard Cheese You need to develop calouses on your bag.
Or what I do is have the saddle at such an angle that the majority (but not all) of contact is made on the cheeks - wears through your jeans in no time, but gives the scrote a break. I've used £20 selle italias for years and they're fine after a little use.

    • also move around a little on your saddle, don't sit in one position for hours, 5mm back or 5mm forward every now and again helps - you will eventually do this without noticing your are doing it.
  • i don't wear padded shorts and the following saddles all work alright for me

    1. Regal (works a treat!)
    2. Rolls
    3. Concor

all classic ones made by san marco. i have a turbo which i'm yet to try (almost NOS, white, not taking it out until next summer) but heard they're great for someone with some "classical" arse like me.

  • might try the rolls again after what you fellas have been saying
it really did hurt but looked pretty

  • i have never worn padded shorts, can't get on with them ,and always used a flite, no probs ever....maybe that's just me.

  • Yeah, rolls wasn't really for me as dicki will tell you, it was so painful on the way back from brighton last march.

Getting the right saddle is really important if you want to ride fixed long distances, ESPECIALLY if you ride on a low gearing.

  • ok this is an ongoing debate but i have a crazy saddle that is really comfortable, and actually has space for your balls

its cheap as well £17.99 off ebay,

i think you have to remember that its personal preference, oh and if its a problem over only 7 miles, you need to sort it out

@nimhbus - ask asm what he's doing with his saddle

  • i personly wouldn't like my balls hanging in a hole.............various reasons

  • The saddle was the first second thing I changed (after the tyres). A harder saddle feels a bit sore for a couple of days but then it is something that you don't even think about.

  • Asm, what saddle do you have?

  • I can't believe that Arione went for £36!

  • Get a spirit level, run it from the highest point on the back of the saddle to the highest point on the front, adjust it so it is level. In my experience this will be fine.

  • wayne_f14 specialized toupe are great - they look razor thin but the flex and the cutaway do a proper job and i'm a big lad

[generally, not specifically in the saddle area before you chip in hippy!]

these are awesome, i had one on my pista. razor thin but you'll be amazed how much room it gives you downstairs.

  • go for the gel or non-gel filled Toupe, do you reckon?

  • non-gel. the shell gets supple after a couple weeks ;)

  • Before changing your saddle and shelling out dosh.. check your position! Proper nicks are nice for longer rides too. 7mi ain't exactly massive though..
Saddle comfort always depends on position, ride style and personal preference/your own body's design. One guy loves saddle x, you might get cut to ribbons on it.

Unlike wheels :) tynan and I agree on the Selle Italia SLR for saddle choice.
I also have a Selle Italia ProLink TransAm XLR? on the Raleigh which is ok over short stuff but the width is wrong for my sit bones.
San Marco saddles NEVER agree with my buttocks..

  • My advice is don't get large gauge guiche piercings if you're a cyclist.

  • Top bit of advice, that.

  • smeears on the ball this morning!! booyah!

  • good work smeear.

  • smeear by name

yeah, it's sound advice, Hip, but how to try them out? you need to spend some time on each, really. i don't have a lot of experience, but i have a cheapie Sesh BG saddle on my cross bike which i have got on OK with - of course i don't knwo if something else would suit me better or not. I just figured that as the Toupe is meant to be the best on the market for comfort, i'd be fairly safe with it. i don't want it that much though, i don't like it's looks, and the Selle Italia SLR is cooler, i think..

but then, i'm very well hung, and need a lot of space for my gear..
