  • Winston and Caspar of Rollapaluza and Devon Mountain Bike Holidays present:

A 24 hour trip to see the Ghent six in lovely Belgium…..£55

Price includes: Chauffeur-Driven minibus direct to Ghent from London, Ferry, Fuel and Tickets with seat to the racing.

    Itinerary:

Meeting point Whitechapel for 8.30 Saturday 24th November
We have limited bike storage so arrive by public transport if you can, or on your hack bike that you don’t mind being squeezed into a tiny lock-up with loads of other bikes.
Leave 9.00am….we can’t wait for latecomers or we’ll miss the ferry!

Arrive Ghent between 4 and 5pm (local time) for a couple of hours sight-seeing, eating and drinking.

Racing starts at 7pm, we have seats all in one row (not the best in the house I’m afraid)
Event finishes at 1.00am we will then drive back to Calais for the ferry then on to London and we should be back about 8am on Sunday.

Some places have been reserved so we currently have two available, these will be first come first served….you can pay by paypal to: paul@pushbike.co.uk or by cash later on this week….if paying by paypal, leave your full name, nickname, mobile number and email address in the notes or message field…. If more places become available I will update this thread.

We aren’t providing refreshments, so you’ll definitely want to think about bringing some lunch and a few snacks for breakfast, water etc. although hopefully we’ll get to Calais with some time to grab something at the terminal….you will also need Euros for dinner and beer.

If you have questions then email me at the same address.

  • Hippy, thanks for the text. Think I'll be in Miami/Guatemala on this date now. Things change :-) It'll be fucking amazing...hope you are going!

  • Dam already booked something for this w/e. Looks excellent.

  • JimmyP Hippy, thanks for the text. Think I'll be in Miami/Guatemala on this date now. Things change :-) It'll be fucking amazing...hope you are going!

    Ja.. I'm going.
Hopefully I don't annoy winston, caspar, etc enough that they throw me off the bus before I make it to Ghent.. ;)

  • If your "real-life" etiquette is anything like your forum behaviour you won't even make it to Dover...

Still, a good opportunity to discuss your playlist with Caspar.

  • Aww.. that's harsh.. I'm nice.. sometimes..

Playlist? Ha! I only play iTunes. How about "1985 Comes Alive" on repeat all night?

  • shotgun

  • Sold! Looking forward to it.

  • FULL UP!....however there are 3 reserved places as yet unpaid ....if these remain so I will release them and update this page!!

  • Unfortunately Mr Plum's shop closed 20 mins before we got there and they didn't want to reopen to sell 20 caps....oh well!
Took very few pics at track, Hippy took loads though, so here's some of the cross!

    Bart Wellens

    Sven Nys

    Richard Groenendaal

    Lars Boom

    Dunes

Rollapaluza team in height and age order.

Gent track before the racing started, was fuller and louder later!

We might organise a trip to Revolution in Manchester on January 12th if enough people are interested.

  • when did it become commonplace to COVER velodromes in adverts? i've seen tracks with one or two here and there, but never that many. seems like it would get kinda confusing/nauseating to have all those ads whizzing by.

  • since as long as I can remember...at the sixes...it's a commercial event with pro riders, it comes with the teritory unfortunately

  • most of them are temporary and are removed and replaced by whoever is sponsoring that event...I think!

  • if i have to ride on that i'm sure i'll crash. it's crazy to plaster a track like that. oh well, a cog in the disgusting corporate machine.

  • hippy's ghent 6-day pictures

There's probably a couple more on the phone camera I've not copied yet. Apols for the crapness - too dark (hence 'need' for f2.8) and too busy drinking to get up closer to shoot.

As I said, I'm up for a Mankchester trip.

  • a cog in the disgusting corporate machine

maybe, however commercial event promoters need to make a profit in order to make the event viable, six day riders are big stars on the continent and have to get paid their appearance fees, also the costs of huge events like that are daunting, the sponsors are needed to keep these events afloat, maybe we should be grateful to sponsors for their support of what many see as a minority sport? We used to have our own six-day right here in London (Wembley Arena), I went as a kid, it was great.....sadly it died out, quite possibly due to lack of interest from sponsors...........

There was under 23 racing, and also some complete novices on the track in Gent (some sort of charity celebrity thing I think) no-one seemed to have a problem with the stickers and I can't imagine why you would......

  • edmundane if i have to ride on that i'm sure i'll crash. it's crazy to plaster a track like that. oh well, a cog in the disgusting corporate machine.

The advertising looks like it is made of some sort of rubber based compound, so they don't fall off!

  • winston have to get paid their appearance fees

i'll race 6 day races for pie.

  • The cyclocross course looked horiffic.

Good to see you all kept local and drank stella.

  • I'm sure Patrick Sercu (one of the greatest six day riders of all time) and now the riders manager who arranges the appearance fees and riders contracts for all the continental sixes will be will be interested in your proposal.....

  • we took the stella with us!!!...no joke.

  • winston we took the stella with us!!!...no joke.

    lol!!

  • Next time we definitely need more time to find a Belgian bottle shop.. :D

That was the only downside of the whole weekend. Thoroughly enjoyed it, Caspar did really well to stay awake driving all night too. Thanks to both him and Winston for organising the transport. The racing was inspiring, am very keen on going to Berlin now.

Nice pics by the way, hippy. I particularly like this one:

That sand isn't going to do his chain any good!

  • hotel I use in Berlin is booked up for that weekend, plenty of others though....you could do a day trip on the Sunday for around 75 quid (flight and velodrome ticket) or leave saturday am and see sat night and sun afternoon sesssion for about 120 (flight, hotel room and two track tickets)....cheaper if you wanna share the room with Hippy....not sure if I'll be going this year though....
