Wheel question.

  • Those of you that have a radially laced front....

I just bought some secondhand wheels and the front is laced radially. I wouldn't choose to do this but it does admittedly look nice.

I have read all here on heads in/out strength/weakness...

    http://www.geocities.com/spokeanwheel/lacingrl.htm

...but, on an aero rim (campag) where the spoke nipples are directional for cross lacing, the spoke from the left side of the hub (looking from the handlebars) goes to the right-directioned nipple causing a bend.

Would this be weaker or is the bend beneficial at spreading the load?

    Any info would be great.

  • Weaker I think. If it has been ridden and seems fine then you COULD leave it. If it was mine I'd be getting out my spoke wrench and removing + flipping that rim (rotating will cause valve/spoke issues). See Arup Sen wheelbuilding site for a good idea involving pipe-cleaners so that re-lacing is easy-peasy. (cheers arup!)
The builder could have done it on purpose if the spokes were marginally too long, but thats a pretty sketchy reason and it would hardly make and difference. I Just hope the rim eyelets aren't messed up.

  • So, 'the seller' ;) reckons it is fine and just a wheelbuilders preference.

I'll see if I can fathom a relace.

    Thanks proven.
