i'm assuming that these bikes/bits aren't made out of solid gold and are not merely painted gold, so doesn't that leave gold-plating as being the only other options? and isn't gold plating an already steel or aluminum bike/bit going to make it heavy as fuck?

i dunno kilgore, gold plating tends to be of the order of 10^-6m. OK, add the copper/nickel for triple plating and you might get an extra 50g, which isn't a lot really.
Also, i'm not sure, but i don't think you can gold-plate aluminium (at least not cost-effectively). -

He had the orignal robbed from the back of a van when on tour, got the frame and a few bits back a few years later - think it sits in his loft now. if you get the joe kid on a stingray dvd, there's a bit on there where he tells the whole story
