  • For the past month ive been looking for an excuse to change the stock tyres on my fuji track, and guess what, it came today. On my way to work on old street i got a puncture on my front wheel, im kinda angry because its gonna be a long 8 mile walk home or trying to cram my bike in the tube at rush hr when i finish. ahhh i dicide when the time comes, any way.. what i want to know is is it better to repare my inner tube or buy a new one? if i do repair it will i feel a hump on that point every time the wheel spins?

  • You won't feel a repair, but I now do both replace and repair (in that order).

I carry a spare, and swap it out and have the confidence of riding it immediately.

The addition to that is that I now do what Roberto advised, keep the punctured tyre and take it home and examine the puncture and patch it up if it's salvageable (holes next to the valve tend not to be, I also avoid long holes and tears). That's your new spare.

This doesn't work so well with really lightweight racing innertubes, but with thicker tubes it works great.

You do not feel the puncture repair.

  • are you referring to the innertubes or the tyres? if you patch your innertubes then you won't feel a bump as they'll be encased in the tyre. i buy my tubes in bulk for £2 each and replace them everytime it blows. i then use the broken one for some other purpose.

  • by the way, what time are you finishing work as i might be down that way and can drop off a spare tube. not 100% sure yet though.

  • Repair if you are sensible. Just go to a bike shop today and buy a pack of patches (pre-glued = better for you) tyre levers and a pump. Have you never done this before?! You can patch a tube until the patches need patching, and then some.
If you want I can come and repair your old tube and show you how for next time - ONLY £20! But someone will probably come along and undercut my price. ;-)

EDIT - ^^ Damn you friendly helpful cycling londoners!!

  • £19 ;)

hovis, love that gif under your account profile!

  • I'll do it for £10.
Or you can have the tools and my unhelpfull advice + jeering for £9.99

    Any takers?

  • Why not mend the punture or replace the tube at work / after work and ride home?

Go to a bike shop buy a tube and punture repair kit and mini pump replace the tube and mend the old one when you get home to carry as a backup for when you get another puncture.

megaman2016 if i do repair it will i feel a hump on that point every time the wheel spins?

Not unless you really screw it up.

p.s remember to check tyre for sharp object inside so you do not punture a 2nd time.

(I hope this is not a wind up)

  • i'll do it for 18.50 - and offer a discount too if you're LCC or a student ;-)

  • I'll do it with a patch made from a used rubberband, stuck on with some blu-tack. £5.00

  • You're all so quick,

I'll do it for a mars bar and a can of beer.

  • Fifty pounds. Otherwise I cannae be arsed.

  • I think people are making offers based on their usual hourly wage.

  • what does tommy do?
he looks like one of those university computer help desk geeks (no-offence tommy) or kiddy fiddler (again no offence).

  • daily rate (hangs head in shame)

  • thanks dogs I have been working n this look for a while now;)

  • c'mon what do you do? or u ashamed :p

  • Tommy? I reckon he's a vending machine.

  • the hell?

  • I just hang out with you dogs to make you feel good.

  • Hovis Brown i then use the broken one for some other purpose.

can we hear your top 10 uses?

  • if it's the tube, repair them! honestly i hate it when people throw away easily reparable tubes, unless they give it to me. if any of you happen to be one of those who throw them away i'll happily take them all from you.

  • provenrad I think people are making offers based on their usual hourly wage.

my hourly wage is (was) a lot more than i quoted. unfortunately, i'm now an unemployed student. i might do some locum work occasionally, but still trying to sort that out (indian police check pending)
