I had the same situation on the bike I just built up - I bought a Shimano cartridge BB to replace the worn out old 3 piece cup & cone set up, but found that with the cartridge screwed in it's not possible to snug down the left hand cup because of the undersize width. I used the lockring from the old adjustable cup as a spacer on the right hand side - worked a treat.

great idea.
Any one know what shells where 65 mm? An old proprietary size I presume? -

Found the following webpage from Bikeforums.
Hi,
Just bought a vintage road frame to build up as a fixed, but the bottom bracket shell measures 65mm wide. Will a modern 68mm BB work ok (possibly one with some adjustment, ie. Miche / Phil), or am I going to have to go elsewhere? It's currently just got some old Campy cups in it.
Cheers in advance,
iBob
