Chain Line Question

Posted on
  • OK here we go . . .

    1) My rear hub is a Dura Ace 120mm (luckily so is the spacing on my frame!) . . .
    2) I am looking at getting a pair of Sugino 75s for cranking duties . . .
    3) And my bottom bracket shell is 68mm . . .

    Q: So my question is, firstly, what length bottom bracket would give me the best (perfect even?) chain line ?

    I see the Phil stainless steel BB on http://www.hubjub.co.uk/philwood/philwood.htm has an adjustable (2mm either way) chainline, would this be of any use to me and/or has anyone got experience of these ?

    The other BB I was looking at was the Hatta BB, which comes highly recommended, what do you reckon ?

    Also do I need to face the BB shell on my frame (the faces are new but have paint on), I normally face the BB shell (or get my LBS to do it) but MTB cranks (especially integrated ones) are fussy about this kind of thing.

    [size=30]Any and all input appreciated

  • I would of thought that a standard axle length for a single chain ring would do it - go to a good bike shop that sells single speed bicycles. Also one thing to bear in mind is that you can get spacers for your fixed sprocket - to move it out - but this will not help in the other direction of course.

  • The key for you is getting the right taper/length of BB axle - you need to get the stats of the BB that Sugino expect you to use with their cranks. The +/- 2mm on the Phil BBs will allow you to dial things in exactly only if you get it close with that first bit.

    hmmm... google is your friend

    With the Phil BBs you do not need to face the shell - neither of the cups has a shoulder that bears against these - hence the +/- 2mm.

    Cheers d_c, very handy, my google powers were weak on this one.
