I work at Imperial, so may know who to speak to you about that. Whisper me your details and I'll see if I can help if you want?

i've just discovered a load of old bikes at my school too - gonna go ask the front desk about them (but in any case we've no cameras on the bike area) and they've all got old notes on them... next problem becomes how to get through a D-lock - any suggestions, peeps? do i just hire an anglegrinder for a morning??

I found a bright orange 10sp Peugot on Brick Lane a few months ago. No stem or handlebars, forks bent and seat busted. Little rust on the rims but the still spin fine. It was left unlock with a sign saying
"I am broken. If you want to fix me, please help yourself"
So I did. Now deliberating what to do with it. Anyone know owt about Columbus 103 tubing?

Peugeot used tubing called 'carbolite 103' - its own-brand Hi-Ten style. Never heard of Columbus 103 though..?!

Or rip off the paper (not that i condone this). Bikes get stolen out of there on a regular basis.

^ hhaa no worrries. me too..
I had a bike stolen from Beit Quad (Imperial) in 2001.. it was a 1984 Rickman Freestyler with Skyway Mags etc. all original. Damn I miss that bike. It was left there for approximately 4 weeks during Summer but I checked on it everyday - One day it was gone. :-(
It was just after the re-furb of the quad, they had security cameras installed but they were not switched on!! Argh!! Nick them - nick them all!! -

God no, don't taint my name with such lies.
Ride a dirty looking old Roberts that should be pretty and resprayed by the time I pick it up tomorrow, or a bright turquoise singlespeed MTB.

architectom eeehhh cut em free.
That's my thinking. They tagged up with paper saying they are going to be removed soon.
[cite]dogsballs[/cite]Bikes get stolen out of there on a regular basis.
It's the users' fault. What's the point of it being on a swipecard access basis if people actually let others tailgate in by holding the door for them?! I've started challenging everyone now. Doesn't take any effort to ask if they have an ID card to get in here.

ok, here's what it looks like now.
i think i did a good thing. i didn't take a before picture because it was such a sorry sight.
it's not finished, the weinemann brakes are pretty ropey, and i need to get a new saddle. but i didn't want to spend ££, i just wanted to knock it together with bits i had available. and that's white tape on the downtube and seat tube.

D-lock is the easiest- Most cars use scissor jacks, put one in the loop(shortways) near the lock end, and expand the jack, the lock is made to resist force in the other direction, the u will just release from the lock. so before you go out there measure th lock width expand the jack to that size, run out, place it in the lock, and if you opperate the jack fast you will have the job done in seconds.

this is am amazingly dumb video, and you are unlikely to encounter a D this strong on the university bike rack, it usually only takes the first step and lets go before it bends- and you do not need to use a hydraulic jack. The anglegrinder will make quick work of it but not too inconspicuous- maybe a reciprocating saw? Hacksaw works, but is slow.
You would probably go to jail if you got caught but- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermite

a dalop of thermite, a small handheld torch, and you could melt through all the locks in minutes.

wow, thanks architectom! in fact, i've ended up asking the school estates people after a suggestion by a guy i know in reception who says it would help save the school money as they're regularly trying to get rid of such bikes, and i'm now waiting to hear back from them... i'm kinda hoping they'll have an angle grinder i can borrow for the purpose if they say yes as there are already a number of old, sawed through locks hanging around. oh, and i've gone and invested in another lock for my bike, too!!
Um..
