tynan Anyone know where you can pick up the silicon/rubber seals for Dura Ace hubs ?
AFAIK they came with the hubs. Not too sure who would have these parts in the UK. You may be lucky and seals from other (ie non 7600) hubs may fit, so you could ask Condor or maybe try mailing one of the nicer american stockist like http://www.businesscycles.com, as they may have them as small parts.

I think (dragging information from a dusty corner of my mind) that they're the same size as DA road hubs, so they might be a little easier to find. I guess Condor would be your best bet in London.

whats that about goldtec hubs being non standard? i was thinking of getting them - me no understand!
black pairs are all ebay for about a ton

Standard chainline (distance that the cog and chainring are away from the centre line of the bike) for track hubs and cranks is 42mm. The Goldtecs are a bit wider apparently and so, in theory, you need a few mm longer bottom bracket. I've found them to be fine with standard stuff to be honest - might check chainline tonight out of interest.

goldtec's have a 45mm chainline

Cheers Pip and Momentum - information much appreciated, off to Condor I go.

tynan - did you have any luck with finding some seals?

flickwg tynan - did you have any luck with finding some seals?
No !
Didn't try too hard really, I will see how I get on through the rest of winter without seals.
I tend to take things apart every few months so I should be ok (I hope).
. . . but . .
If you do locate some please let me know !!

cool will do - have just been thinking about a dura ace - maybe i'll have a look into it at a later date

@ flickwg
been thinking about a dura ace as well, had a look at some boxed ones in brixton cycles, they come with what I was told were seal rings, but no seals. Though in conversation with special order bod at evans I was told those might be the seals themselves.
printed out some exploded diagrams of shimano hubs and think you might be able to buy seals from any shimano road hub and swap the seals over though might have to verify with momentum and winston who have said they've done that to their dura ace hubs to make them more road worthy. Pretty sure the seals would work on the high or low flange, if of course they fitted... -
• #38
cool - do you have yours yet
i was gonna order a set from the states - maybe see if someone can bring them back for meyer but it seems important to ask winston

no haven't purchased yet, trying to ascertain whether this seal thing is possible/doable/ and what the cost would be for the seals, may have to start a discussion specifically about seals to get a response from winston and momentum on the topic.

Stef ya can geet Dura Ace with sealed bearings...have fun searching.
Best value out there: goldtecs. But that's my opinion. No you cant... closest your gonna get to Dura Ace looks with sealed bearings is the Suzue SB m8.

corny, have a butcher's at Royce; http://www.royce-uk.co.uk/
All handbuilt by four dudes in Sussex.
Supreme quality and they build to order, so you can spec seals etc.
Give them a call they're really helpful. Cliff's yer man.

@ kowalski,
thanks for that, was thinking about a titanium bottom bracket for the steed before I was persuaded to put a phil in there.
problem is Royce hubs are a bit expensive for just a second set of wheels, which is what the Dura Ace are going to be, almost twice as much as I want to pay (I know everyone is crying poverty these days, but you have to have a budget for these things otherwise it'll run away with you), also I like the look of the dura ace hubs, something about the combination of black and silver.
So question becomes does anyone know which shimano seals, from which shimano road hub will fit in a dura ace track hub? and can these seals, if they exist, be brought seperately, and how much would they cost?
answers on a postcard... -

I haven't actually sealed mine, but I've overhauled them a few times and also overhauled Shimano road hubs so know what all the internals look like. The locknuts of both have a groove in them on the side away from the bearing races (hopes that makes sense - I'm finding it hard to describe this very simple concept). The track hubs don't have a seal here, whereas the road ones have a rubber seal which fits into this groove. I am almost certain that they would be the same size, since it wouldn't make sense for the bearing set ups of the road and track hubs to be different (increased manufacturing costs with no benefit). I ran the track hubs without seals and they were fine, but you'll need to overhaul them every few months to keep them running smooth.
I'm actually going to sell my wheels that are built with these hubs as I have too many wheels sitting around doing nothing. They're 28 hole though.

thanks hippy got the exploded views, already printed them out and was going to discuss this evening over my non alcoholic beverage.
but have just realised how stupid I am as the dura ace are 36h, and I wanted to rebuild my front rim as a rear, and its a 32h. bugger
May have to buy a pair of goldtecs instead, anyone got a front and rear fixed/fixed 32h, set of goldtecs going for sale? I'd prefer silver.
actually seen the dura ace i'm after are 32h. D'oh, confusing bike bits, wrecking my head and sanity... -
• #47
@ momentum
thats what I was thinking, was hoping you or winston would chime in to allay my fears.
would take those wheels off you, but I want to rebuild my current red ambrosio rim as a rear since the machinings wearing away, got them secondhand and they've built up since about 2000, also means I can keep red rims motif going on the next (if I like racing round herne hill, don't shit myself at the steepness of the banks) proper track bike, (funds permitting). So any dura ace hub I buy has to be 32h.
So I'm assuming Winston is the only one who has actually sealed his hubs, where are you winston? we need your input. -

These are as close as your going to get... to DA hubs...

re: non sealed hubs, use shitloads of Phil Woods grease, pretty waterproof, draws out the time between services. I like servicing hubs and BB's but that's just me.

Does anyone know the part no for the silicon seals, and does it replace the dust cap with a seal or is it just replacements for Y-216 04000. I am concerned that DA 7600 hubs won't last any length of time in the wet.
Anyone know where you can pick up the silicon/rubber seals for Dura Ace hubs ?
