• For the record, I did go back. That is when I went back and said I thought the bike was unsafe set up like that (very politely, as a matter of fact) and got told that axles don't slip forward and that he had been a mechanic for 14 years and that it does not happen. Short of walking in there with my laptop and doing a google search for "axle creep", I am not entirely sure what I can do to convince Mr. mechanic for 14 years that it does happen and that if happens in an axle like the one he left me with I would be in trouble. What I can do is relate my experience and make it clear that I thought I was not dealt with in very good faith. And I am not anon. I use my real name, people know me (not all, but some do) and my email address is right there on my profile should BLB want to fix it (though I would probably ask that someone else work on the bike as I am not entirely confident about the guy who worked on it the first time around).

  • he's right.

    axles don't slip forwards...

    in vertical dropouts!

  • You're just not strong enough RPM. :P

  • grrrrr

  • RPM GRRRRR

    Don't give yourself a hernia ;)

  • hippy You're just not strong enough RPM. :P

    Haa

    edmundane
eeehhhh Yeah, I agree with Evilmonkey.

Perhaps we should have a recommended bike shop thread, that isn't allowed include any of the big shops like Condor, Brixton Cycles and BLB. Places that focus on service, and don't have to stock every single fixie part under the sun (let's face it, people like Will at hubjub can get anything fixed-related). I went to Putney Cycles today, they were nice and friendly :)

Out of interest, what shop does furious work for?

Just wondering, why would you put Brixton Cycles alongside the other 2?
I've read both good and bad things about Brixton Cycles. I've only dealt with them once. I mail ordered a Goldtec hub from them. When it arrived (very well packed, lots of bubble wrap) there were chips in the anodizing. Wasn't very pleased, and they should have told me on the phone that it had these marks. I really, really doubt they would have occurred in transit.

Off topic: anyone know somewhere good to get a Brompton serviced?

  • eeehhhh Off topic: anyone know somewhere good to get a Brompton serviced?

Their factory is only in Brentford, West London. Maybe you can see if they do it direct? I can't imagine you'd be able to find a better service than having them do it.

  • Oooh west lundun.. package interception.. noice.

  • hippy
RPM GRRRRR

I was giving you a hernia.

    via the power of psychokinesis.

  • Kinky.. what else can you give me remotely?

  • "I think it is pretty clear that the specific complaints are directed at BLB. "

Sorry Alex I disagree your only ever state at the very end of your post that the shop is near Brick Lane for the rest of your rant you just state LBS.
Although I understood where you ment I'm guessing there would be some less informed/not local to London who didn't.

Yes I might of jumped down your throat but that is due to me being irksome at best let alone on Sunday mornings when I'm at work with a hang over.

I also get angry over continual bashing that bike shops get on internet forums (not just this one). I'm not saying the one that I work in is perfect; far from it. JUst trying to get enough staff to work on paultry wages to cover all the shifts is pretty hard, let alone staff that have brains and know how to treat customers. We can but try.

Either way enjoy the postage strikes or try another shop or two. Some of us can offer good service at a pretty good price.

  • My LBS in Guildford is great, I get good advice, the p!ss taken out of me and honest opinions. I've had poor service from them (mountain bike service) but they sorted it and apologised when I took the bike back and explained the problem.

  • furious, i think he was just trying to vent without pointing directly at BLB right away (so as to make a point about bad service in general and not point the pinger directly). we were all hoping to find out who the shop was, and he let us know at the end of the rant.

fwiw, i have heard some not so good reviews of BLB from friends whove been in there. "elitist" was a word that came up more then once

You've still not actually told us which shop you work for so we can't try you.

in which case BLB are only reflecting an attitude endemic to fixed wheel riding.

back to the OP, there's a relevant point in there somewhere, but i could do without the first person narrative and emotive reasoning.

it'd be interesting to see how many people are happy with the service in BLB. i think they're copping it a bit unfairly here. judging by the build quality of the guercotti on the wall, they do know what they are doing. for me, they've never, ever put a foot (or spanner) wrong.

  • The anonimity of the internet is a beautiful thing. If you meet me in person I'm more than happy to tell you where I work, were as on the internet I'm happier being unknown. That way I'm not dependent on a tea break to answer questions or be misunderstood from a typing erroid.

Do you own a white mtb with a brown saddle?

if we meet you in store, are you happy enough to tell us your internet nick?

  • Can we get "Who is furious tiles?" spoke cards?

  • A Specialized, maybe P1 or some kinda jump bike with brown grips as well.. ??

  • i know who furious tiles is, he has a white bike but it's not a MTB. he does have a mtb but it's heavy and he's not very good at riding it.
he's a nice chap but has very bad taste in clothing.

  • Mr tiles has broken cover on this very forum.

The shop he works in could well be my LBS when I move in the next week or so, but I'd hesitate to call a shop that is part of a chain an LBS, TBH, BTW.
