Actually I don't think it's a bad plan at all. Perhaps just coming out with "are there any gay people on here?" was a bit of a blunt way to raise the idea.
I'm sure most of us can understand the desire to have your partner into cycling too, especially the whole fixed/ss thing.
So looking towards a community of people who share your interest is a pretty good way to go. And social rides would indeed give you the chance to meet people who shared your interest in cycling and who might also possibly be looking for a partner.
It's the way you started trying to communicate that idea which was weird.
