I got given some about 3 months ago.
used every day, they work fine. they are an mtb xc pedal, and get broken off road when the going (or riders) get over tough..
for the road=no trouble.
not sure I'd buy them for £3o Vs Time aliums..
but for £20, I'd say go for it.

I'm reading this thread in ever growing confusion.
Not that I'm anti eggbeaters (I'm not), but about the cleats wearing down so quick.
Either:-
a.) I don't use my bike enough (daily commute, + weekend fun)
b.) Aren't clipping in and out properly (all seems to work, feet stuck to pedals, feet not stuck to pedals) or
c.) have a pair of super cleats...I bought a pair of mallets 3+ years ago now and am still using the cleats from them.
So dunno about wearing quickly...

mine don't seem to be wearing down too much too quickly
I use mtb shoes so they don't really scrape on the deck when I walk.

i have to say i think the cleats ( premium) do seem very soft and a bit poorly made compared to SPDs - 2 of the bolts sheared off as well, and i ended up using old SPD bolts which are much better made

I had a pair of these and just didn't get on with them. They are good looking and so easy to clip into but....
My feet did get numb after longer rides, as there is not much support. (They were agony on Dunwich)
The cleats wear stupidly quickly. My first set wore out in about 4 months.
There is quite a lot of play with them up and downwards between your shoe and the pedal which doesn't help with stopping.
When stopping and using a lot of upward pressure on the pedal they have occassionaly released unexpectedly.
i have since swapped to Time ATAC. These are one of the most secure, solid pedals I have ever used and provide a very stable platform to put your weight on, I love them. However I hear what Claus was saying
"But I can see the general issue with buying new clipless: There is hardly any way for serious test rides."So if you can come by my work one day next week I am happy to lend you a set and some newish cleats so you can make your own mind up.
(I ain't going to be using them any time soon.) -

that's interesting, Atomica - do you find the Times nice and easy to get in and out of ?
-
• #34
A lot harder in and out, but I like the rock solid feeling, it just takes more practice.

and by 'practice' you mean ' falling over at the lights, bruising your knee and looking a twat' ?

A bit of an extra comment...
I've been riding the daughter to school all week and I use my mountain bike with old eggbeater chromes (2nd hand fella's) and they are REALLY different from the mallets. Easier to clip in / out, but no real feeling of security. Also I can see where atomica is coming from on the aching foot, I can feel the chromes through the bottom of my shoe and have a slight bruise there.
Oh and RPM might have got the reason for the ever lasting cleats as I use MTB shoes too...
On the "trying out" side of things, my 2nd hand set were a tenner incl. postage, not a terrible loss if I hated them (given that I can probably sell them for that if needed). A bit of a faff, but I'm guessing all systems will take some getting used to that a test ride might not deliver?

(I ain't going to be using them any time soon.)I'd love to take you up on that offer if possible. I've been considering eggbeaters for a long time and now I'm just confused.

I use Candy Sls rather than the eggbeaters and they seem fine. The platform seems to provide enough support without being too big and I can't remember getting any bruising or a time when my feet went numb.
The cleats have been going for about a year so far, but my shoes have quite a thick rubber sole so they're pretty recessed, as others have said.
I did notice there was more up/down movement with my diadora skorpione shoes than my everyday touring style shoes, once again probably due to the thicker sole on the everydays.

"Two floors" on Kingly Street would be ideal. Email me object17 at gmail dot com if not and we can arrange a meetup.
RPM has smartys
I have murtle's old Eggbeater SLs, and i like them quite alot. a tad easy to come out of, so i might have to adjust the float.
