I've been riding the daughter to school all week and I use my mountain bike with old eggbeater chromes (2nd hand fella's) and they are REALLY different from the mallets. Easier to clip in / out, but no real feeling of security. Also I can see where atomica is coming from on the aching foot, I can feel the chromes through the bottom of my shoe and have a slight bruise there.
Oh and RPM might have got the reason for the ever lasting cleats as I use MTB shoes too...
On the "trying out" side of things, my 2nd hand set were a tenner incl. postage, not a terrible loss if I hated them (given that I can probably sell them for that if needed). A bit of a faff, but I'm guessing all systems will take some getting used to that a test ride might not deliver?
A bit of an extra comment...
