  • I going 'clipless' on the Dahon

is there any reason why I shouldn't buy these

    like a PROPER BIG reason

because they are easily the coolest looking pedals out there

  • BIG PROPER REASON: imagine what they´ll look like after a few months :) pretty shabby i reckon. Would be nice for the first couple of weeks tho!

  • I use them on my bikes and I've had no issues really. Just took a look at my black ones and the black has worn away from the contact points and the area where the cleat has engaged etc. They do look well used that's for sure but I still think that they look cool. If you want to avoid those issues of visible wear get the cromo plain versions which still look new ish in comparison. Good pedals though and so easy to clip into.

  • 31trum was having issues with them 'releasing prematurely' IIRC. That's a big reason. Get murtle to comment..

  • i've heard horror stories of people not being able to unclip from eggbeaters and stacking into trees.

    they do look cool though

  • I've got 4 pairs of Crank Bros pedals - the eggbeaters, quattros, mallets and acids. Never had any problem with any of them not releasing or releasing prematurely. If i was being critical I would say that the cleats are expensive and pretty soft (intentionally) so wear down quite quickly.

  • I've never had any problems unclipping, apart from the usual slow tip at the lights, but that was panic, normally they're fine. You change the angle of release from 15 to 20 degrees too, so when you get more used to them you can make it even harder to unclip by accident. If your on SS then defo fine to use. I might consider something more substantial for fixed, with a bit of a platform, eggbeaters are about as sparse as they get.

  • I ride eggbeaters and think they are pretty good although I miss the hefty click of my old looks. But I can see the general issue with buying new clipless: There is hardly any way for serious test rides. You basically have to rely on other riders experience. What about starting a discussion on "who lets me test ride clipless system x for a week?". It seems many people have more than one set of pedals anyway.

  • ok, i used to use the eggbeater sl's on my single speed with no problem, when i went fixed i found the platform not quite hefty enough, had some bad moments of accidental unclipping, resulting in some one legged buck-a-roo moments.i was running brakeless and skid stopping though. there is no tension adjuster,
i prefer my spd's firmer especially now i have wound them in. a more solid click.

that all said wanna buy my sl's, better than the c's, stainless steel so no scuffing... 8^)

like murtle used eggbeaters, both C then SL, yeah they look cool for sure and the foursided entry and extra clearance useful. but used to annoy the fuck out of me how quickly the cleats would wear down. and i also had a few hairy moments of accidental unclipping - thankfully not riding brakeless

  • i'm currently riding eggbeaters and quattros and they're both fine. i think unclipping happens when the cleats wear down (which is pretty quickly). i've got a set of premium cleats and they seem to be made of a tougher brass, so they're still fine. i've also found that my left cleat wears out quicker than my right, so after i go through two sets of cleats, i put two right footed ones on my shoes. essentially it's a dirty buy-two-get-one-free scheme.

  • So the cleats wear quickly, and that can lead to premature release...so how quick is 'quickly' ...?

Hovis can you point me in the right direction for the premium cleats, have you got a link ...?

They are going on the folding Dahon, short 8miles sprint from the railway station to a place of work

I don't think I really need platforms not for that distance

  • that all said wanna buy my sl's, better than the c's, stainless steel so no scuffing... 8^)

how much do you want for them?

  • I heard the 'arms' can break and that if you get even the lowest of the ti's it is MUCH better.

  • JOL I heard the 'arms' can break and that if you get even the lowest of the ti's it is MUCH better.

I really can't see the axles breaking, not for street riding.

Jumping doing trials/freeriding, yeah, but no way on a fixed.

jimmyp beat me to the link. as for how quickly the cleats wear out, i suppose that depends on how much you use them. riding everyday, you'd probably be looking at three months or so? i find that the left one wears out quicker because i put my left foot down and leave the right clipped.

  • also depends on the depth/newness of your shoe treads....

  • Cleats wear too quickly, and there's a small contact area so there's not much support, you'll get sore feet on longer rides. A mate of mine had the spindle come apart once, and heard that this was a common problem. That was a while ago so they might have fixed that issue now. Ritchey V4 are good pedals. I've got the one-sided version, 220g/pair.

  • i like the four sided clip in. i haven't had too much problem in terms of contact area. if your shoes are fairly stiff, it'll support your pedalling for quite a few miles/hours.

I meant the arms, like the clip/beater bits i have seen break.
But there is always a first time for everything if bad luck strikes.
Admittedly this is on a geared bike but anyway.

  • I don't think it's the geared, fixed or ss difference that'll make a difference simply what the pedals have been used for.

I really can't imagine any decent clipless pedal, including eggbeaters, breaking on a Dahon. That's the point I was making.

I saw those pedals in the picture above in my LBS the other day and they look wicked. The little platform looks better for longer rides. The idea of not having the platform is to shed mud anyway, and I know London roads are pretty bad but not that bad :)

  • the Dahon is a specific build for short 8 mile sprints train station to a place of work through rolling countryside

that and a spot of shopping...;)

for long rides I'll take a 'proper' bike except I don't really have a proper bike

my bareknuckle is such a hard ride that after about 20 miles bits of my body go numb

  • looking at the pic above it looks like they're the quattro ti pedals which apparently have a maximum weight limit on them. i think it's 185lbs or something along those lines. that, to me, is an indication that they probably won't do so well under heavy stress.

  • I need a cheap pair of clipless pedals. Are "Crank Brothers smarty" any good. I can get a pair for £20.
