Does quality matter on sprockets & chainrings?

  • Guys how much of a difference do you feel using quality sprockets and chain rings vs the cheaper options (Using the same ratios), i would have thought not much seeing as they are not moving, well not in the same way as you hub or BB does. Maybe im wrong but im just asking seeing as i've only used the one's that came with my fuji

  • Cheap chainrings tend not to be perfectly circular - the ones pressed from sheet material are often much less round than CNC'd ones - this can cause loose/tight spots in your drive chain.

  • cheap cogs can strip your hub, and you can torque cheap chainrings. how cheap were you looking to go? i dont know about here, but in the states you can get an EAI cog (which everyone i know, including myself, loves) for $25 (12pounds or so), and a decent chainring for $40 (20pounds or so)

    And wears out quicker...

  • Thanks for the knowledge, i think i might just change the sprocket so it doesn't strip my hub.
