Could you stash a folder under your desk, if so have a look at one of these;

it has horizontal dropouts so would be ideal as a fixed and looks less gay than a Brompton. Don't know how it rides as I've never ridden on, but as it's the seatpost that stops it from folding, so should be fairly rigid, unless you snap your seatpost.
Was going to buy one a couple of years ago when I visited NYC, but ended up going to Miami instead. When I contacted them the NYC bloke was more helpfull/sensible than the West Coast people, NYC bloke was willing to sell me a frameset at reasonable cost (sorry can't remember how much) while the other were only willing to sell me an expensive complete bike. I'm not underestimating what a faff/expense it would be to import/build up one of these, but would be nicer to ride than a shitter. Might you be able to do it through a friendly bike shop and so through the bike scheme to get it half price?
