Jash - think I'm a few weeks ahead of you (and still riding ss having managed about an hour fixed on Sunday before deciding I'm not ready for stop/start traffic on it yet). I'm running 48/18 and also had the frustration of spinning out too easily on the flat. It takes a little while to get used to, but I'm really appreciating the acceleration you can manage off the lights and you do learn to spin faster on the flats. I've only been overtaken twice now, both times by other ss's and on each occasion I was able to up my cadence and tuck in for the free ride. I think you just learn to ride differently (and my full aero tuck on descents is definitely improving!). Getting back on the road bike almost feels like cheating, it's so much lighter and easier.
3 miles isn't much - maybe you should lengthen your commute..
