System EX or Miche hubs?

  • bigben Ooops, is it true that you can't fit a freewheel to a miche hub? Not having ridden fixed or single yet other than a few quick rides I'd like to keep the option open even if I am building it fixed to start.

you can and I do on one of my bikes. not ideal but it works just fine.

and miche hubs have an italian thread as andrew said. but it's close enough that you can use shimano etc. only problem may occur if you then switch from shimano back to campag. well thats the story i heard ;)

  • Now I'm all a pickle. Don't mind which I get really and Brixton are strongly advising EX. Anyone had difficulty getting track nuts for miche?

Seems like either type would be fine and dandy. Miche has the psaz, EX flip flop and no issues re: different threads.

  • the thread thing isn't an issue. the differences between the thread types is minescule.

really its down to whether you want a track hub or the flip flop i guess. in the end, both are up to the job.

  • The Miche should come with track nuts - although they aren't stainless. The different threads really aren't a big deal at all (I think Miche do it just to give forum people something to talk about)- if you want versatility you should get the flip flops.

  • Brixton made up my Miche/Jalco wheelset, tracknuts were indeed included... Just been out for a quick lunchtime ride on them, smooth, smooth, smooth! :-)
EDIT: Once you've ridden fixed you won't *ever *use the freewheel side on your flip-flop...

  • The cog threads aren't an issue as they (English and Italian) are almost the same. The lockring and axle nuts are an issue as they are completely different and incompatible. This is a double problem as all the Miche hardware (lockrings and axle nuts) is shit, and the only replacements for the tracknuts are Campagnolo which cost a lot (like £20 a pop or something). You can replace the lockrings with Campag, Phil or EAI. The Miche axles rust really quickly as well

I've had both Miche hubs and System EX and think that the System EX ones are better because of their compatibility. There have been some reports of snapped locknuts on the EX hubs, but these are dead easy to replace because they are English threaded.

Yeah, but you will use both sides of a fixed/fixed hub if you do anything fun with your bike. E.g. commuting/track, normal riding/polo, fast group rides/touring.

Word... Fixed/fixed deffo the best option IMO... bigben's tossin' up between a fixed/free System EX and a single sided Miche tho'...

  • system ex suck big time, when the bearings went in the rear after only 6 months it took condor 2 months to get me new ones, by that time the wheel was almost hitting both chainstays with the amount of play and all i heard was grinding for those 2 months.
try dia compe gran compe the best hubs i've ever used.

  • oh and they're cheap £40 front £45 rear

  • Has anyone used SJS own?

    Very Reasonable...

Should have just gone to a bearing seller, have one in a day. Condor would of had a bearing press.

Cool - hadn't registered all the detail in the thread! I'd go fixed/fixed cos you can still use a freewheel on one of the fixed sides if you want.

They're pretty similar to the System-EX in terms of quality from what I've heard.

You can get replacement bearings for all cartridge bearing hubs form any bearing supply shop. It shouldn't have taken Condor that long considering you could google "bearing supply" and find replacements in about 2 minutes.

Those Gran Compes look really nice for the money, but think they only come in black.

  • i did ask condor what bearings they were and i'd get them as i couldnt see the bearing number but clueless condor didnt know either actually i think in the end they pulled bearings out of a new one to get rid of me pestering them every other day.
i've seen the gran compes in gold as well dunno if they cost more tho

  • I'm planning fixed/fixed giving me leeway to learn which ratio I like, plus unless I am very confused, as long as its not the miche I can put a freewheel on one side of the fixed / fixed, yes?

Was planning that the Jackson would have some serious bling but then I bought this a few weeks ago and that kind of put the lid on £ for a while:

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=160155458928&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=006

So the Jackson will be a nice build and a respray but nothing too ££.

PS: The Condor blows my black Evans that some of you have seen into the weeds, even my lardy arse can go fast on it.

  • yes you can no problem

  • i have a gran compe in gold. They're not bad.
i bought it in Japan so no help there.....

  • get a second hand dura ace or campy record for the same price ( ish ) ?

  • do they make goldtecs in pink, i'm building my girl a christmas present... im thinking 583 tubing, pink paint pink deep Vs sliver bladed spokes and some pink hubs, either phils if i can get the $ or a shop in ohio does pink anonized fourmulas

  • Goldtec's in stock now - £15 off RRP for a pair (black and pewter only though I'm afraid...)

  • told ya paul was the man!
