Depends. I've got a mini U-lock and want to get a cable aswell because I can't lock up to some things. Also I don't feel that safe only locking through the rear triangle. Would like to lock my U lock between the frame and front wheel, cable between rear triangle and immovable object and a seat cable to lock up the seat to the U lock.

Whats a seat cable?

Thats a great idea. Never thought of that. Thats a lot of loocks to be carrying though.

You can make a simple seat locker by running a tight lenght of bike chain around seat rails and seat stays covered in innertube.
Keep it there all the time if you are worried. -

When my chain snapped 6 weeks back pulling away at holborn towards TCR I took a pretty serious spill. The ABUS around my waist took a LOT of the edge off my fall on my right hip - the plastic cover where the cable enters the locking mechanism came unclipped (snapped back in place and solid as ever), and the armoured cable got scratched almost down to the metal! I did get some bruising from the lock but no broken skin - it would have been nasty as my waist is nowhere near as tough as my elbows / shoulders (both got road-rash) I'm gonna keep wearing mine.. but I can see how it made your fall worse. "Argh - my coccix!"

If you're looking for a seat cable there's a little yacht chandlers in Covent Garden that'll make a steel leash to length.

I use a mini U to lock up in college which is cool, but I wouldn't use it in town. Thankfully I have a friendly carpark where my family rents spaces for business so I can lock it in there. I'm thinking of getting a KryptoNY chain though for serious lockage.

That's why those Abus armoured cable locks aren't so good in my opinion. I've seen a few cut open where the thieves have managed
to pull the armoured covering open a little (like when you fell) and get mr snippy on that weedy cable inside. -

^EEEK!!! Yeah I was surprised to see braided cable visible at the edge near the lock when that plastic bit came off, but it clipped back and I couldn't get it off again + looks solid so assumed it was OK - ABUS is still a good visual deterrent I reckon.. The main plastic covering barely scratched down to metal armour - it still saved my skin (yes literally :-))
I sometimes use a cheapo D-lock for front-wheel-to-frame duties but now you've told me this I shall upgrade to Krypto + cable if I ever do daily locking-up outside.
Cheers Mr B. -

Not having much luck recently, are we? ;o)

Just lock the thing up with about 8 locks. Who ares about the weight. Lock it lock it lock it. Get some tesco chains. They're £12. Get 3 of them and some good locks too. It'll be a good workout

I'll be lucky to get to Bayswater Road, let alone fall off there!

i use a ny3000 to lock my back wheel and frame to something then a krypto thick cable lock to lock the front wheel and frame also

One chunky abus U lock through the rear triangle. Both wheels and seat post are fixed with a set of security bolts I got from London Field Cycles, £39 and a spare "key" that goes on your keyring.

I just bought one because I read that they are the choice of couriers and urban bike riders. I thought that must mean they're a good choice among people who really need to make sure their bike doesn't get nicked.

fell drunkenly off my bmx one night with abus wrapped round waist. Had big bruise down side where body had been bent to locks will.
Ached for a long time. Still rather wear it round my waist than have heavy d lock in bag. With my current bags don't have enough space and they always feel awkward and uncomfortable, unless I've got something to pad them with in the bag already.
Have heard tales of people chipping hip bones with locks round their waists when they fell off. But I tend to ignore them. -

coccyx ouch DDM, bad luck there - remember screwing my coccyx up sligding down tube escalators - couldn't walk for a week.
anyway, i wear the abus one round my waste and still reckon it's the best way to go. just less of the one-handed racing.
heal quicking dude

Refreshingly honest answer.
Also, a strong mini D lock used correctly (and yes, it IS a pain in the ass to find a proper bike stand), combined with a second lock
where necessary is - as far as i know anyway - the strongest locking strategy.
Nothing beats a bike that looks like shit though.
I have a NY fuhg mini D lock which i bought when i got my Pinarello- it weighs a ton and to be honest is slightly pointless.
It won't stop a determined thief with tools. All it does is buy me a few more minutes.
Abus discus chain round waist far more comfortable... that and my beater is the usual (and most useful, hassle free) combo for me. -

Hmm, I guess the answer indeed is not to fall off! Cheers for the input though guys. Not to mention good locks cost more than I can afford now I've persuaded myself I NEED Archie's Grobag.
Ta for the best wishes JW. -

they NYC fashon is a kryprto chain round the waist, and a mini fagghitabout in the back pocket... just sayin...
ill lew you know whats goin on on the west side when i get their... its like my life is a messenger city tour of the usa
So, fell off this morning. Was racing along Bayswater Road with some guy on a flyer. Hit a pot hole with only one hand on the bars and ended up landing right on the top of my arse where I wear my Abus lock. Really hurt and is now nice and swollen. What are people's thoughts on best type of lock because after this I'm thinking of not wearing one around my waist. If one uses a D-Lock do you need a cabley thing to use it with?
