I walked past the aftermath as i live just south of the british library and the buses had backed up because of it. It was awful, books and clothes, bits of bike strewn all over the road. I thought someone was making a road safety film.
This huge truck just stopped in the middle of the road.Stay safe people.

Blackfriars Bridge two days ago. Cement truck, police, and a bag of ripped groceries. Not good.

Primary position folks - fuck the car horns - never get left of a lorry.
-

Who tells that to the typical commuter folk though?
Buff Bill raises an interesting point about the ASL feeders leading people around the left of stationary vehicles.
Sh1t, even I ride left mostly.. out of habit. :S -

I saw this (edit: the BBC programme, not the accident). And I saw a young lady go left of a truck down Kings Road this morning........thankfully she made it through. I've stopped riding left coz I'm Sh1t scared of pedal strike. Bendy Fecking buses.....wot a fantastic idea they were.

Fuck, that is tragic.
Godspeed, chaps. -

Amazes me the amount of folk who ride down the left of traffic at junctions, they seem to have no perception of the danger?
I ride wide in the road, and usually pass down the right of stationary traffic if safe to do so. -

I like to pass on the right but it's quite scary when cars are going the other way. I've seen a few of the cyclist ahead boxes or whatever they're called with a lane down the middle between the two traffic lanes.

I had a nasty experience with a lorry this morning .. you guys are right.. it's too dangerous being on the left. Any way not sure how much difference it makes but there's a petition ... http://www.lcc.org.uk/index.asp?PageID=1011

That's the best place for them though. It might be intimidating but it's safer than sending cyclists left, especially if they want to turn right. It's where they have them in a lot of places in Europe, where there is a need for cyclists to be on the road rather than cycle paths (which seem to be good on the whole, unlike here).

Advaced stopping something or other.
Personaly I just hang back if I am near a lorry and can't pass it safely. Just be safe kids.

It's fine filtering on the left, as long as you keep your wits about you. Junction + Lorry: Be aware and should you decide to filter, make sure you got an escape route.

There was talk on another thread (insults I think) about throwing the Highway Code at bad drivers (epecially because they've just made it bigger and heavier!). I think passing on the inside is one of the most sane rules in the code. You shouldn't pass on the inside, cars don't look there, lorries just don't look EVER. In fact, most drivers don't check mirrors/ blindspots at all, left or right. I've been sent flying overtaking legally on the right, as has Billa off here (by a Police Van). Just be bold, command respect and do it like a car, innit? Who wants to ride in the gutter anyway? Bumpy on 23x700s anyway :(

I am amazed when I see people driving along with their near side wing mirror turned in towards their door from when they parked. It is worrying that they have driven down the road without ever looking to notice the wing mirror.

Just to say it again - NEVER EVER UNDERTAKE LORRIES, CEMENT TRUCKS, BUSES, VANS, even cars.
No matter how clever a cyclist you think you are, its just not worth the risk.
Go a bit faster, take the space of a vehicle and overtake on the outside.

You've got it all wrong..
Get right up behind 'em and wait, using their draft as a leadout to full effect by shooting past at 60kph. Impresses the ladies no end.. ;)
THE death of a Hampstead cyclist who was crushed under the wheels of a cement truck in King’s Cross highlights the threat posed by construction traffic.
The truck’s driver was fined £300 and given five points on his licence when he pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention.
Islington MP Emily Thornberry will present Blind Spot. A feature on BBC1's Inside Out London (19:30 03/10/07).
