Stiff links in chain

Posted on
  • I've been running a SRAM PC1 chain (srams cheap £8 1/8" chain) for about 3-4weeks now, I started with it on 3/32" sprockets and I've now gone to 1/8" sprockets. I have have a couple of stiff links in the chain now, they do not straighten out once past the sprockets, I think they may be the cause of some clicking in the drive train. I've oiled the hell out of te chain this evening but its still not any better. I'm running 44/16 and there is 20 stone of me stomping on the pedals so the chain is getting some abuse!

    any advice.

  • Check the pins? Get a chain link thinger and see if the pins are a bit out of place. That happened on my chain, but only because i hadn't pushed the pin all the way back through after taking out a link.

  • If you don't have a chaintool to loosen the offending pins, you can try grabbing the chain either side of each stiff link and flexing it laterally back and forth a bit. Usually frees them up a bit, but better to use the appropriate section of a chaintool.

  • what a coincidence, i was just repairing my brothers bike and had to deal with this.

You could flex it but i find it's best to change it. Helps if you have a spare chain kicking about, just replace the stiff links with non-stiff links.

  • I alwayd do what BMMF says: find the offending link and (gently) bend the fscker side-to-side until there's no stiffness.

  • feck off

  • suck my balls! (now this is a flame!) :P

  • no!

  • Damn! Was it coz i didn't say please?

  • no, usually you say "bitch"

  • I knew I forgot something.. damn this alcoholism!

  • as with murtle's gay photo in spain, keep this ball-sucking to yourselves gents... :P

  • Cool, I tried 'working' the links while drowning them in oil to free them off, but didn't really get anywhere. My LBS said (in a polite speaking to customer way) being a fat bastard you may be better with a higher quality track chain, than Sram's cheapest 1/8" offering.

  • Even the cheapest chains shouldn't have stiff links if joined (and worked over) properly.

  • no just make sure the pin is centred then moved the chain back and forth at 90 degrees to that at which it normally moves i.e across the chain the direction it doesn't usually bend if you know what i mean
it just loosens the plates a bit after them having been pinched with the chain breaker

  • Just to point out this is not happening where the chain was joined, its happening about 4" and 6" further down the chain.

  • hmmm the plot thickens

  • The same trick should still work.. stiff links are often at the join but not always. Keep workin' it :)

  • I'm assuming if the chain's still on the bike, you've slackened the tension right off before giving it a lateral wiggle at the relevant links...?
