There needs to be a shift in society that it becomes acceptable to wear a helmet and for kids to grow up without being laughed at for wearing a lid. I know some people say that they won't protect, but you might save your life if you do wear one. I mean, that's good enough for me. It's pretty much Pascal's Wager for wearing a lid rather than 'god'. :)
As for helmets that look cool...
Well, if you've got a big head, it just won't. I went round loads of shops and couldn't find one that looked sleek simply because I have a massive head (62cm). As well, the more money you spend the better they fit and the cooler they look.
I've got a Giro Havoc: http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=giro+havoc&btnG=Search+Images&gbv=2 I prefer the mtb style ones because they make my head look more normal, but it's well comfy - I don't even notice it's there. Was quite pricey ~£60 but if it saves me in a crash, it's worth it.
