Once you're on the route, I think you can do what you like.
I marshalled the ride to the TdF prologue from Greenwich. The pace was really slow, but that was 200 riders of all abilities, including 20 primary school children at the front with their cycling instructors.
You'll manage slow, Hippy. Particularly as you'll be carrying all the sugary treats for the picnic.
