Whats the Columbus equivalent of Reynolds 531c tubing

  • And any other vitus steels 5130 Cr- Mo what would equate to Reynolds 531

  • columbus is above 531 and is the same as current 753 i'm told, but u also get columbus s, sx and slx in ascending order

  • 531 was the best available in the 30s-70/80s - but then Columbus SL was introduced and proved to be equal/slightly better - prompting reynolds to make 853, 631 etc (air hardened) I can't remember the differences b/w 531 and 531c (competition) - but guess it is just a thinner version?

  • Columbus SLX has internal spiral ribbing (ooo-err!) that is meant to make it stronger than SL.

  • is it coz 531c is butted?

  • from what i can gather 531 is normally 531C (for road bike, so it is thinner) and 531st (thicker gauge for touring bikes)

The standard 531 set is the 531c racing tubeset which makes for a
frame around 4 1/4lbs. This builds up into a fine responsive frame
ideally suited to road racing, but lacking a little stiffness in the bottom
bracket area. For smaller frame/riders it also make a nice touring
frame, but it really has too much flex to be good for someone carrying
full cyclecamping loads on a larger frame. To solve this weakness
531 st has a heavier gauge down tube which resists the flexing which
causes the dreaded speed wobbles on a loaded tourer. It also has
beefier stays for the loads imposed by cantilever brakes. The taper
gauge forks are of a flattened oval profile to give clearance for wider
tyres without using wide fork crowns, and that's it...

  • Columbus Offer a range of tubing some 'above' (like ultrafoco), some below (Thron, Gara) 531, the equivalent is something like SL/SLX

  • This is my favourite materials site..

  • If it's Columbus tubing you're interested in this is the link you need!
    Columbus Tubing Chart
Had it bookmarked for ages. All weights are there too and everything you could ever want to know!!!
    I'm riding TSX. ;-)

  • Just be a bit careful when drawing comparisons between the old style tubes (up to the early 90's) like 531 or SL and the more modern stuff like columbus spirit for lugs or reynolds 953(stainless). Really different steels and gauges. Steel bikes today are on average far better than they were 20-30years ago. (of course the same could be said for all other materials too.) Just because they are built from "old fashioned" steel doesn't mean the R&D stopped 30 years ago.

Todd: Great resource for buying 2nd handers. Anyone got the same sort of thing for old reynolds?

  • As far as i'm concerned gara is the equivalent of 531, columbus frames have always been a little heavier than reynolds, but the confusing thing about columbus is that have a lot of discontinued tube-sets that are still largely available. Eg sl or slx. I think columbus at the mometn are only producing Spirit,Life and Zona. Spirit being their best so far progressive butted steel.
Mind you a frame built by Roberts with Life tubes would cost almost a grand and weigh not more than 1.3 kg...
    I'm a sucker for columbus

  • columbus didnt make anything to better 753 at that time thats why eddy merckx used it !

  • Mad thread dredge skillz mate.

  • ^ What's the current record? 7 years is the most I've seen so far.

  • And I bet dogsballs thought he got away with his error but no, dolph has (somewhat belatedly) put 'balls in his place.

    Good foruming.

  • Fuck columbus

  • With my 27.2 mm diameter?

  • Should i get a frame built out of zona or max though?

  • Yes, definitely.

  • That is technically correct. To re-phrase... if I was to buy a frame from either Zona or Max, which would be preferable?

  • i thought zona was 631's counterpart. sense would say the pricier one .

  • They are the same price.
