Vibration in the pedals

  • Watcha, Just bought my first fixie (I feel a bit bad, but after 2 botched conversions and a left over voucher at my LBS, I thought why not just get one ready made...), a Charge Plug. Liking the bike a lot at the moment and only a few early moments of terror when I forgot and tried to freewheel...

But, not sure if this is a fixed thing or a bad setup but at certain times (mainly when I'm putting a bit of effort in). I get a bit of vibration on the pedals? Any idea what this might be? If its summit simple then I can sort if, if not then I'll let the guys at the shop take a gander...

    E.M.

  • vibration?

    not ideal.

    possible causes:

    chain too loose/too tight/bad chainline/loose chainring bolts/loose pedals/pedal bearings/bottom bracket.

  • I'm kind of hoping a brand new bike won't have bearing trouble. What kinf of symptoms should I be on the look out for on chain tension (too lose / tight?)

  • My money's on a tight chain. Does it still do it if you lift the back wheel off the floor and slowly rotate the pedals? There should be a bit of play in the chain, but not so much it can derail.

  • Seconded.

Lift the back wheel and turn the cranks slowly.

DO NOT TRAP YER PINKIES TWIXT CHAIN AND CHAINRING AND/OR SPROCKET

Check the chain tension at various points. Most likely it won't be even.

You'll need a tiny bit of play (couple of mil up and down) at the tightest point.

  • Vibrating pedals eh? I'm sure there's a market for that..

  • Where do you stick yer SPuDs, Mr Hippy?

    Do tell.

    Or maybe not...

  • Maybe you could use eggbeaters for the "mud" clearance?

  • back on the point of this, I'll take a shufti at it tomorrow. On the play front, are you saying that along the chain line it should be be lose enough to allow a couple of mils movement at the midpoint between crank and wheel?

  • Opinions vary, but pretty much.

Depends where you draw the line between "play" and "movement".

The tightest chain will still move, but a touch of tension-free play is entirely different.

Tbh, if yer velocipede is new just run it for a week or two and the chain will ease off anyway.

Didn't say I was the market.. just reading this forum makes it obvious there's a load of deviants out there.. :P

  • Deviant is only a relative term, Mr H.

said as he cracks his chain-whip

  • I can loosen your ring with my whip, too.

  • I swapped my 15T for my 16T so had the whip out tonight.
