  • I cannot believe this post has lasted this long without a list being formed... where's smeear at?

    I'm up for this, but i know nothing about where it starts from or whatever... i'm stockwell way, in between camberwell and brixton.

    Have you registered for this. As far as I know you need to be registered to ride (but how are they going to stop you?)

    Freewheel

  • Nah that is bull, it is open to everyone. Reg is for helpers or people who want to download those silly motifs.

    I am going with the Florence on the Dad-bike so count me out of the track-slide comp.

  • anyone from the oxford area going down for this?

    also, is the the same as rollapolluza?

  • no

  • is this like a (i don't want to say 'legal') but 'sanctioned' critical mass where the london govt closes off certain streets to allow people to ride their bikes on?

  • bingo

  • hey everybody, i have a request from a friend in s.f. to send whatever promotional materials i can gather for/from this event.
    if you have/get anything, can i have it when you are finished? i'm looking for anything; fliers, cards, ads, geegaws, freebies.
    i'll try to collect everything the week after the event, pop it in an envelope and mail it off. thanks!

  • Just had a good look at the London Freewheel website - it is absolutely terrible.

    There seems to be an absolute absence of any decent information.

    The web site doesn't even have such basics as what time the thing starts or ends, or whether non-registered cyclists can come and join in.

    It would be pretty shit if I arranged for a load of friends to join me on the ride at 11.00 am and the thing happens to be between 1.00 pm and 7.00 pm.

    Terrible, terrible website, they seem to have spent all their time trying to make the site funny and forgot to provide basic info ?

    Every aspect of the day is turned into a chance to show how funny the designers can be, now I love a good joke (why only yesterday I set my own mother on fire) but for fuck's sake lets have the information before we have to look at pages and pages of whimsical and tepid humour.

    [/rant over]

  • Maybe the guys who came up with the copy and graphics is a keen motorist.

    *  Pedal Pirates
    * Bike Bandits
    * Chain Gang
    * Super Cyclists
    * Bells Angels
    * Wheelie Wizards
    * Skid Squadron

    WTF?

  • Have a look at the Etiquette & safety page - here was a chance for them to give new riders some hints and tips about road saftey, instead they used it as another chance to show how funny the designers can be with some, frankly unfunny, cartoons.

    Same thing with the Preparing yourself/training guide - where they could have put some half decent information for people new to cycling - instead we get more government sanctioned humour ?

    EDIT: I just found the start and end times - 11:00 to 4:00 - it was under the main page >> Event details >> Getting there is half the fun.

  • leeww you need a drink and maybe a spot in the sun with a nice book.. you sound more bitter than me!

    There's no fscking way I'd organise 30,000 riders into London. This is the first try. Give 'em a break.

    I know a few 'non-cyclists' riding to it and isn't THAT the point?

    Who cares what the website is like if people are still registering their interest and preparing to have a go?

    Yes, it would be great to encourage these people, give them information rather than spend London's money on some web designers who attempt to emulate (and get spectacularly wrong) what they think is cycling culture.

    It is just that it is a shit website where there should have been a place to quickly look up information.

    Very true, I am just ranting about a shit website, I care what the website is like, and you care about me ranting.

    We are on the same side, honestly.

    Yeah the whole thing is incredibly patronising. I ride a bike, so that, what, makes me a complete moron?

    They forgot to mention double-checking your bike has wheels, drive train, brakes, etc.

  • Does anyone know what the deal is with registering for this event. On the site (which is pretty rubbish) it says that registrations are closed because they* "want to ensure that riders have an enjoyable, safe day of cycling, and that did mean putting a limit on the numbers that could register"*.

    I've invited quite a few friends down and none of us have registered. Are they going to stop us entering the designated area? Should we not bother?

  • Public roads.. how are they going to stop you?
    Just bring friends and if the sh1t hits the fan we'll riot!! :D

    Guess I was the only one who found the whole Joe "buns of steel" Bloggs, etc. funny.
    Maybe you lot should ride with deraillers for a while.. you seem to be taking life too seriously :P

  • i wouldnt worry about the registration thing, i mean, iv done the london to brighton the last couple of years and iv never registered for that!

    YYYEEEEAAAAAAGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

    I love humour, I even watched a funny TV program once (benny hill if my memory serves me right)

    . . . but, if the choice is good information for everyone or a few pages of shit like this . . .

    . . . I would prefer a website with clear information telling me what routes the 'hubs' take to the event, times, places, a clear indication of whether unregistered riders can join or not (I registered months ago, but have received nothing) and stuff like that.

    You may prefer some (hilarious) cartoons and a website that only works on certain browsers, but I see no reason why London can't have something great for it cyclists.

    Maybe I need to be more chilled out like you and just enjoy the hilarity of the exercise page ? :P

  • You could email them your views and if this happens again, they might sort it out for 2008's ride..

  • bad hippy.

    I'm with leeww on this one -

    I care about what i do as a designer,

    the hovis website smacks heavily of focus groups and ConsUltaNTS who have sacrificed sound design principles to produce what they believe to be accessible and fun but totally misses it's first objective - informing

  • ...and yet... they are FULL registration-wise.. so, regardless of crap design or not. It worked. There's movement all over the place! Game over man! :P

    I did that a few months back - mainly about the registration not working on certain browsers - but you are right, my complaints about the poor info should be directed at the organizers.
