  • Second what winston said - my old bike came with 28h record road hubs and GEL 280 sprint rims. I didn't realise what I was buying at the time (got it 2nd hand a long long time ago), but they were phenomenally light. They're nominally 280 grammes each, hence the name, but they actually come in at about 300 each. Mavic don't make any aluminium rims that light any more as they were barely strong enough, and indeed my old front rim started cracking round the eyelets about 7 years ago. Also, they don't present a very good breaking surface as the sidewalls bulge perceptibly at each spoke hole so you get this intermittent breaking wear pattern. They're perfect for track wheels though.

Of course, the other thing you can do to save weight is go low-flange - as far as I can tell there's absolutely no reason to have a hi flange at the front and not much reason at the back either unless you're quite beefy.
