  • kboy I live up in Dalston and really like it. Getting a bit arty farty but still a great place. Good value for money too i think, and if you want a bit cheaper go more towards stoke newington or Hackney central. Around mare street / london fields is nice too

Regarding bike routes I commute Dalston - Mayfair every day and I ride:

Dalston - Balls pond road - essex road - Rosebery av - theobalds road - High holborn - Shaftesbury Av - Mayfair

Record times: dalston - mayfair: 22mins, Mayfair - Dalston: 19mins

I was thinking about Dalston. I am working in Russell Square, so it would be really close for me. It says something about the traffic in London that a ~3 mile journey takes you 20 mins, though.

  • Im not very good with those miles (Im swedish and we use metrics, mmmm.... metrics) but google-maps tells me dalston-mayfair is 5 about miles.

To Russel square is dead easy from dalston, you can take nice bike paths from Angel, and if you want to get rid of traffic go through de bevouir town rather than balls pond road - essex road.

I havent done that much riding around town more than my commute but after trying to wiggle through back streets i think its easier to go on the main roads, less corners, braking etc

  • stratford to mayfair best time ever ( wind assisted I presume ) 19 mins ( just don't touch the brakes !! )

  • did sth kensington to east finchley (over hampstead) on my pista a month ago in 28mins. tough work with especially with 48:16 up fitzjohns av!

  • West ealing to liverpool st. this morning 44min. That's 1min shy of my record and stopping at most reds.
27kph slow for a TT but not bad across London.

  • dicki stratford to mayfair best time ever ( wind assisted I presume ) 19 mins ( just don't touch the brakes !! )

    That quite fast!

Euston to Plumbstead, best time (that I have atually timed) about about 44 min and High Holborn to Plumstead best time about 36 min (late at night though).

Both felt fast but still not averaging very fast, I started timng from my office is my excuse:). The 44 min was using the foot tunnel (another excusse).

  • last night i did top of stoke newington high street to end of walworth road/start of camberwell road on 48:19 within 30mins think that's not bad?

  • It's always faster going South - it just feels like downhill when I imagine the map.

  • Know any good routes in the city?

  • i like sprinting london wall where it gets wide just affter moregate

  • edmundane last night i did top of stoke newington high street to end of walworth road/start of camberwell road on 48:19 within 30mins think that's not bad?

I think I must have spotted you on your way up there :)
I was just eyeing up someone's brand new dark blue Bob Jackson as you went past going north so I was understandably distracted!

  • i cross entire city every dy twice during peak traffic and I prefer cutting through Euston road instead of the
recommended (TFL) route through The Park & The Strand passing byTrafalgar better since
I can handle jammed cars & buses on the road a lot better than other commuter cyclist.
the erratic behaviour of the odd cyclists is much more of a hurdle to me than jammed cars on the road while
I pass by on the bus lane. but its all personal I guess.
But I have to admit I miss to overtake these 1000 pounds suspension MTB with noisy drivetrain with my silent rolling
    minimalismn

  • "the erratic behaviour of the odd cyclist"

haha you ride along Euston Rd. too? I've probably cut you up or forced you into the wheels of a truck then! :)
What do you ride? I'll try not to get in your way too much.. ;)

  • this is mine .
my collegues call it the EasyJet bike.. But I like it

Where you the bloke pushing that white trackie with da two girls next to him ? hoehoe

no offence... I would push my bike no problem if it would allow talking to two ladies meanwhile...
the guy was talking about his bike most likely anyway..
    nice ride whoever it was...

  • Yeah.. i always have women hangin' off me and my bike..

No, that wasn't me. I don't remember seeing your bike either. Where do you commute to/from? I'm going Ealing->City daily (usually early to beat the traffic).

  • I go Queensway, Paddington to after Kings Cross turn right and straight through Farington, back up through Grays Inn normally.
Today was quite funny 'cause I had 5 social work pints in my head, kinda happy wavin & smilin at the guy with the white track frame
and blank DeepVs holding onto his Drops whilst explaining his perfect chainline two the two ladies next to him..
    .Bloddy dangerous riding pissed though..

  • I go up Sussex Gardens. It seems to cut the corner up to Marylebone and avoids pOxford st. then over the top like you, Farringdon. Grays Inn on the way back too.

I didn't ride home tonight as I had to carry a laptop. In honor of this supreme act of self-sacrifice, I forced myself to consume beer instead of lunch and then avoided returning to the office for a number of hours :)

I usually feel good riding drunk. I was feeling quite ill last Friday for some reason.. and then I saw someone smash a glass into another person's head on Euston Rd. and felt a lot better.. ;)

  • well I feel fine too..bit obviously I am mistaken. my normal 35sec trackstands go down to
"cant be asked level" riding far to fast and jumping everything that is bright red.
what are you riding ? we ought to pass by each other one day... me obviously uncool hung over
    and faking everything there is.
Will also participate in the next social ride to put faces to the avatars..am just very tight up
in work stuff & and looking for new flat since g/f is comin over from Germany too
need to sleep now...and yes my employer also blocks .....

  • i ride down the hackney road through clerkenwell to marylebone every day, takes me 30 mins on average. is a bit stop/go, but i find that i generally can see the reds far enough away to slow down and not have to stop more than a couple of times when i have to turn across traffic....

    tuppence.

yeah we waved at each other didn't we? you're so easy to spot on your yellow ciocc!

  • hippy

just curious -- why wouldn't you ride home with a laptop? Is it because it's too bulky or do you prefer not to risk damaging it? I ride with mine in a shoulder bag quite often -- the hard disk failed after less than a year, but then I got a carrying pouch made out of quite thick shock-absorby material and it's been fine for years ever since (tw).

  • It's too bulky and I prefer not to damage it - it's works so i don't care that much but I need to use it so it's gotta work.
I've ridden with just the laptop before and not been to concerned but this is the whole case/powersupply/bits so it's big.
I'd never ride with my own laptop. I've had too many hdds die before..
