  • leeww This baby has got it all:

    I did say fixed.

And ride quality should be factored in.

    The Surly's are butt ugly.

I think I'm leaning towards my next bike being a titanium cross with couplers, v-brakes and fittings for mudguard and racks. I'd run my road wheels on them during the summer months and switch to cross wheels and tyres during the winter months or for fun stuff.

Just open up the freewheel mechanism and fill it with glue.

  • I know it's not bling enough but what's wrong with On-One's Pompino for do-everything duties?

Or, with cash to splash, full custom with everything you can think of added to it/built-in.

  • kowalski Your name all over it, Mr K.

    Disco.

That's exactly the thing I'm looking for.

The beauty, simplicity and all-round gorgeousness of a track bike, combined with the functionality and travelability of a bike that has couplers, rack & mudguard fittings, etc.

I'm going to contact the fellow.

  • If you want mudguards on the bike then I'd suggest getting forward facing horizontal dropouts rather than trackends as it will make packing the bike and fixing punctures much easier. I'd also space the rear end at 130 so that you can put gears on it too (it is meant to be an allrounder, right?). I'd also get it powdercoated, rather than painted, so that it looks good for longer than the first trip abroad.

Spacing will be 120mm. I already have great wheels that I would definitely be keeping and using. I'll risk my all-rounder needs being fulfilled by flip-flopping and single-speed.

Is powder-coating that much more durable?

    Don't Phil make 130mm axles :-)

There's been a few good threads on BF.net (while it was still good) about S&S coupled bikes, especially lots of info from Chimblysweep getting a couplered Jonny. It seems like the additional parts that you have in the case, coupled (haha) with the abuse that frequent reassembling leads to, means that the frames are more likely to get chips etc. I commented on getting powdercoat because of hearing those stories and because powder is much more durable than paint (but not as glossy). Here's a photo from this thread http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=257806&highlight=coupler of the aforementioned Jonny after a spoke wore through the packing material:

You might want to think about a slightly beefier tubeset as well if there will be lots of travelling (rather than occasional travelling) to help protect against dents.

  • so david, can i have first refusal when you decide to sell the jackson!?

  • i'm sure he'll be keeping it...

can you have too many bikes??

  • this geeza does a bit of custom bling as well

    llewellyn bikes

  • Elvis i'm sure he'll be keeping it...

can you have too many bikes??

Actually, I can. The flat is full and I cannot accommodate another bike yet have a need unfulfilled by my current stable.

I'll never sell the Serrota, it is too perfect for me.
The BMX is way too much fun and I use it too often.

I've mentioned a few times that with the Bob Jackson, I feel that the frame is fractionally too large for me. It's a 60cm and I think I would have been wiser getting a 58 or 59cm frame.

And if my replacement is an elegant fixed frame that bridges the track minimalism and the cyclocross utility, then that will be the bike to use all of the time, and the only bike in my stable it would deprecate would be the Jackson.

So yeah, a 60cm 1yr old 853 tubing Jackson with 753 forks, inc titanium BB, chris king headset, thomson seat post & stem, campy record cranks is likely to come up pretty soon. Cost as new, somewhere in the £1,400 mark for all of that. I realistically know that with depreciation and wear taken into account the re-sell price of bikes is about a third off (optimistic) down to half off (pessimistic) the original price tag.

I'll be keeping the bars, saddle and most def the wheels. The wheels I don't think I'll let go off until I wear them out.

  • Why not keep all the nice components and just sell the frame? Otherwise you're losing money on all your components as well as on the frame. If you want to replace all the components then you'll get a lot more if you part it out when you sell it. If the cranks are 170mm track ones then I'd beinterested :)

  • errm, i'd be interested in the frame alone. my size and doesn't it have more relaxed geo??

  • You only asked so that you could get dibs on the cranks ;)

I'd sell most of it together as it fits the frame. Only if the buyer wanted to exclude bits to drop the price would I part things out. Don't most buyers want a BB that fits and gives good chainline, a headset that is in place, etc? To me offering cranks that fit the BB and look wonderful on the frame just seems natural. Besides, they're already on there so less work for both parties.

  • velocity boy You only asked so that you could get dibs on the cranks ;)

    Busted!

Fair points on all the rest - I just think that the cranks would look good on any frame in the universe and so the you might as well keep the BB too to get a good chainline on your new bike. Taking the headeset off is a bit of a pain though.

  • and yet.. hippy would like your headset.. :)
