  • hi

i am a first time fixed gear rider and am building up a bike from scratch. I just need some advice on some cranks ive found. The colour scheme for my bike is gold and so ive found these cranks. i just wondered if it was possible to attach them to a bob jackson 531 track frame and also if they would take a 46 ring?

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=170146220893&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=007

will this work? also does anyone know of anywhere i can get gold components eg bars, seatposts, brake levers, brake hoods?

    cheers

  • You might need to change the BB on them but otherwise it should work. I know that nitto did a gold anodized groupset but the prices of that are pretty cheap. For the rest you'll be able to find stuff but it will take you a while.

  • If you are OK with a flatbar levers (not on the drops) then the gold finger is a good bet -

Theres one here on Gumtree london for a fiver: http://www.gumtree.com/london/17/13003117.html

Also theres lots of gold anodised bits around that BMXers use - hubs etc.. good luck those cranks are pretty nice!

  • you could always invest in a spray can.
For the stuff where it wont matter only!
Oh and brakes: i think goldfinger:

  • wow. sorry provenrad

  • cranks should fit, will find it very hard to get bmx chainring in 46. 44 is very common.

  • hi

thanks guys, if i used a 44 chainring what sort of gear would i have on the back? 17?

also i think ill have drop bars due to it will be a training bike as i am a racer

    cheers

  • i forgotyour chainline might be dodgy, but you should be able to space out the chainring. Actually re-reading your post, did you want to use the BB as well? as mentioned above you may need to get that seperately. worthwhile measuring the size of the bb shell and contact the ebay seller.

    17 or 16T i would guess?

  • ok thanks

  • Here is my weight weenie gold seat post (31.6mm x 350mm) - but it wasn't cheap, I think USE make (or made) a gold anodised seat post also.

I recently looked into Anodising at home, it is not too difficult, the results are often very good and might be very useful for a project like this.

  • One tip, don't make everything gold on your bike, leave a pew choice parts in black, silver or white (or any other colour that would match the gold) - it will make the bike look much nicer!

  • ahh home chemistry. That looks like a lot of fun.....
oh and seriously- always add acid, i have a couple of seriously good memories, and one or two scars from doing it wrong.

  • hi guys

    thanks for the advice.

one more question do i need to get a specific BMX chainring? and will a road chain work with this?

    cheers

  • being a sugino crank arm spider, it may be both bmx and road.

i'm actually leaning towards what other say and get normal stuff then sending to get anodised.

  • There's some gold nitto drops on ebay.com at the mo. Be careful not to over do it. Might be hard to match shades of gold. Good luck.

  • well the build is still going and there have been a few new purchases:

a set of gold modolo levers
    cinelli silver bars
    gold chris king headset
gold nokons (still deciding if it will be ott)
    selle italia beige rivetted storika

pics will be up by the end of next week hopefully

  • Me too, I have Nokons on my single speed (front and rear brake) - they actually work out lighter than just about every other cable out there as you can run really tight curves/bends with them.

  • Rather than hunting around trying to find everything in the right colour, I'm thinking of get all the bits I need anodised. Any ideas as to where I can get it done?

at an anodiser! you can do it at home if you are handy. although you need a lot of acid.
