I take it it's not recommended to buy down there then?
-
• #128
No...
You wouldn't want to support the thieving scumbags, would you?

wappingwarrior I take it it's not recommended to buy down there then?
the stalls which have licences are reasonably legit. brick lane bikes started off as a market stall, after all.
there are lots of randoms selling bits from blankets rolled out on the side of the road, and they aren't.
ditto full bikes - places which have permanent premises tend to be more legit (though far from guaranteed) than random blokes wandering around trying to offload single bikes (of which there are several, none legit).
if you want to buy random cheap/old/scuffed to fcuk second hand parts it's okay. but anything that looks too much of a bargain is probably stolen.

I'm enjoying this forum already!
BUT......
What's the score with the market over the weekend? Guess I can go down both days! Will be visiting BrickLane Bikes on Saturday anyway!

• #138

-
• #139
there's no market on saturday. nothing. zip. nada. niente.
there is a shop under the arches that may or may not be open on saturday, depending on the whims of the owners, but they sell rustheaps for more than they're worth.
go on sunday. (BLB is open on Sunday also)

But it's definitely Saturday if you want to buy a stolen bike - like unxetas said :)

• #141
But now we know you are going we will all be hiding around the corner ready to beat you if you buy anything dodgy..
-
• #142
Think I'll have a look on Sunday! Don't want anything stolen!
-
• #143
but don't forget people Jan and Brick Lane Bikes started as a part time stall on Brick Lane rolling pieces out on blankets and selling stuff to the Sunday Market trade
It is difficult I know to work out who is legit and who isn't -

dicki but don't forget people Jan and Brick Lane Bikes started as a part time stall on Brick Lane rolling pieces out on blankets and selling stuff to the Sunday Market trade
It is difficult I know to work out who is legit and who isn'tflipside is - they had tables and they had stuff that was new (in boxes) and generally knew what they were talking about.
easiest way is to ask the price. if it's absurdly cheap, it's nicked.

supposedly the police are doing weekly raids on unlicensed sellers, and (in addition to their "crime prevention" stand) have set up a regular stall nesr Sclater Street to sell off some of the bikes that they'd normally sell at auction (and those they've reclaimed from theives), and i guess are hoping that their presence will help discourage the illegal traders.

so hold on, let me get this straight. The police, are taking bikes from theives, and then selling them off.
Hmmm. ingenious. Might have to check it out ( sundays right?) -

Yippee!
Found a wreck minus wheels and covered in rust but still with a crappy seat on it, to replace my stolen item.
Thanks for the help and advice guys.
I now have a seat which fits my 'under the radar' bike!
Now to replace all the cool 'quick release' bolts with something a little more brutally functional - and street practical. -

the shop under the arches that appeared to be dodgy and full of damp clothes - has gone.
as have the arches, for that matter.
