What wheel size do you use for the calculation?
-
• #5
(chainring / sprocket)x 27
gives you inches for a 27" wheel.....still used by most as the way to measure gears...it's not exact coz 700c wheels are slightly different diameter but it's still pretty close and still a far more understandable scale then just saying 47:14 or 51:16 or indeed using a similar formula in millimeters!

• #6
Replace 27 with 26.4, and I think that's about right for 700x23.

theres a better one on my computer but this will do

im on 65" i should change cause its a little silly, but on the other hand its good for me and great fun

65" here too - on my hack bike (Inbred). I don't think it's silly. Low enough to cruise okay at 12-14mph with my son on board, just riding around at 18-20mph no problem, emergency accelerations to 25mph, downhill at 30mph do-able.
Sounds excruciatingly sensible for in town :)

BringMeMyFix Spinning 106" is where it's at ;p
haha, on the track yeah? ;)
I'm on 69". Quite a few hills in Basingstoke - not so good going down them but up them it's just right. Spin like mad on the flat sections and get away from traffic lights faaaaast. My commute is only 15 minutes so it gives me a good aerobic workout, too. Plus my knees will last longer.
Spinners of the world, unite!

I signed upto londonfgss way back when it started I haven't really been back since. Wow has it got busy in here.
Gear inch caluclator link below and it does skid patches too.http://staufenberger.typepad.com/repository/2007/06/fixed_wheel_gea.html

I was on 69.5 which was great for the city. (Melbourne) Will probably do the same here although 50:20 was shit for skid patches. All of two!
Spin FTW as they say.

Graham Obree rode 114 inch gear at 110rpm for his world hour record. Anything less is just not trying.

69 ;) for me. 42x16. perfect for all the hills in my manor!

I was on 75.6 (42-15) for the last two days and swapped to the Raleigh 69.9 (44-17) and the Raleigh gearing is sooooo much nicer through the traffic!
Calculated for 27" wheels which is wrong but easier to compare so fsck it, I'm sticking with it!
being completely crap at numbers and figures, i thought i knew how to work out gear ratios, but i realised i don't at all.
anyone have a foolproof formula for a total moron like myself?
or - what's a 48:16 - i thought it was 72"...?
