wayne_f14 pearlescent takes he hard edge off the white and gives it a bit of depth, more like the colour of mik
the mercian kingfisher flamboyant is a gorgeous colour
kingfisher is quite a bit darker than what I had in mind, isn't it? Not bad neither. almost what it is at the moment. Whats your off white colour on the mercian chart?
-
• #28
thats what it is at the moment. Maybe a bit more blue and less yellow than kingfisher...
-
• #29
mines 46 on the mercian chart, pearl white, the flamboyants have got a bit of sparkle to them i seem to remember - you can email them for a catalogue, they have bigger swatches in that
-
• #30
I don't think armortex can do sparkle. Do you like the kingfisher better than the light blue? Origininal inspiration was 60's beetle.
-
• #31
if you're getting an armourtex paintjob then i don't think they do pearls or flamboyants and to be honest i think thats what lifts the white.
I'm digging the blue on the vdub and it's not going to be mistaken for a pomp
polished components look nice against it as well if that bumpers anything to go by and a pair of white velocity rims would look fantastic against that colour
-
• #32
and here's an example of the flamboaynt finish
nice also...
-
• #33
love those flamboyant colours if they are subtle and not the total pimp my ride effect. But keep that option for a real fancy bike in the near future.
so what you think, light 60's beetle blue or darker kingfisher blue? -
• #34
after looking at the vw i'm sold on the blue

Hey fgssers, i'm curious about something. When i got my forks chromed, i asked the chap there if he could chrome rear dropouts, or maybe half the chainstay. He said he couldn't, and i didn't ask any more questions. So, does the chrome need to be the base layer before any powdercoating gets done? How does a section of the frame get chromed?
Punkpixles, are you going to mask off that chrome when you get it blasted and powdercoated?
By the way, armourtex do do sparkely, they did mine like this, and i'm sure they can do other colours than silver. But, you can also buy this thing online/ebay which you mix with the powder coat, and it gives a shimmer effect.like this http://cgi.ebay.com/Shimmer-Wine-Red-candy-paint-powder-coat-custom_W0QQitemZ280144969615QQihZ018QQcategoryZ28111QQcmdZViewItem

On my frame we just tape off the chrome bits. Apparently chrome will not be affected when baking a powdercoat as it would need higher temperature. From what I know they dip the frame into a chrome bath so I suppose it will not be a 100% accurate line where it meets with the powdercoat. Therefore I would think they do the chrome first and the powdercoat afterwards. Originally there was a bit of thin tape on my frame between powdercoat and chrome section.
Nice job the sparkly finish. But for my everyday bike it would be a bit too fancy. I am already happy if I get the colour right as I quite like that bike. Lots of happy fixed gear moments on it.

I'd say go for the blue, white's for the bike that only comes out on sunny days and you want to dazzle people,
on the mercian chart I'm feeling the french blue enamel (41) or the ice blue pearl (61), still lighter but look like they have a bit of depth to them -
• #38
thanks Cornelius. Looks like blue is in the win. Might go for the lighter but with bit more yellow in there so it looks less like the pompino... or darker?... decisions, decisions... always been crab with colour
-
• #39
geeza, if you've got chome on your ride then it's not going to look like a pomp,
i'd be going with that vdub blue, the chrome chainstays and forks are going to look sweet against that
-

either of the light blues will look really sweet.
i'm a sucker for that slightly robin's egg-y hue (http://www.bentler.us/eastern-washington/animals/birds/robins-egg-blue.jpg). if you go with the greener, watch that you don't veer too dark/too green, or you lapse into celeste territory. that beetle blue is a solid choice. i wouldn't go darker. def. go solid (i.e., not flamboyant/pearlescent), and agree that it will look great w/the chrome.
and not that you're asking, but if it were my bike, rather than matchy-matching the bar tape with the frame, i'd go with warm colors or neutrals; a nice chocolate brown, or dirty-basketball orange, or tan-ish yellow/yellow-ish tan, natural cork, or even deep brick red; any of those could look really good w/your current saddle. OR if you are putting a tar black saddle on it, any of the previously listed options, OR charcoal gray. -

Quite similar to the beetle (maybe a touch more green). Whats celeste territory?
Definately no matching bartape in this case. That was just originally on the bike (old photo). Will have black Brooks saddle which I still have, so might go for black, or none at all. -
• #42
celeste territory = bianchi brand colour. you told me you dont really like that ;)
so cajeta is very right. -
• #43
no not so keen on the bianchi green.
Times up. Going to Armortex tomorrow morning and decided on the beetle / robin's egg blue. Thanks everyone for their comments!!!!

punkpixel, please find out what other glittery colours they do. I think they'll do any RAL colour, but i don't think RAL have glitter. when i went there, i just asked for 'silver', and he showed me a list of silvers and one of them happened to be it.
also, ask for steve, he's the chap who did my frame. i think he's runnin' things.
-
• #45
yeah i would like to know what glittery colours they can do
purple would be sexy with my gold rims, very Prince
-
• #46
sure I will check on the glittery colours, especially on the Prince compatible ones.
Personally I prefer those only on super fancy keirin type frames. Seems to be a bit über-fancy for my humble everyday ride. I will report tomorrow. -
• #47
I still like the white.
-
• #48
if you go glittery paint you can get this smicko lazer cables :D
-
• #49
and then I call myself garry glitter and get locked away. so no more cycling.
I'm almost there already. Just need a bit more gloss and some kind of metallic base-coat.
