Chainline on formula hubs?

Posted on
  • Anyone know what it is? I'm after something cheap-mid range to space to 130mm to get friendly with an old road crank which is giving me something like 43.5cm line at the front if I use the inner part of it.

  • Heres the info you need:

    http://www.sheldonbrown.com/chainline.html

IRO (same as Formula) + Cog = gives approx 42-43mm chainline. Any of the hubs listed with a 35-36 centre to shoulder measurements will give approx a 42-43mm chainline depending on your cog.

    Hope that helps.

  • Cheers pip - was wondering if Formula were the same as IRO or if I had just made that up, that chart was infuriating me at not having Formula on it when was I was looking earlier ;)

  • Found this here - From the same factory :)

You might know these as Formula, System Ex or IRO - but they're all made at the same factory and only differ in the sticker that's attached! This is the 36 hole, fixed/free ('flip-flop') hub pair. We're forever being asked to lace these into wheelsets, so thought we'd make them available separately.

  • The formula ones come with a short axle that can't be spaced up to 130, so you'll need to change to a longer one. IRO get em with a longer axle in though.

  • I was looking at a Formula rear today - its fine for 130mm spacing. You cant change the axles in them though.

  • My mistake... I was thinking of Ambrosio ones

  • I have a Formula rear hub. There's 5mm of axle poking out of the nuts on each side on my 120mm frame, so it should be fine for 130mm, assuming that they all come with the same length axle.

  • I have a "zenith" double fixed large flange hub which i'm pretty sure is a rebranded iro/formula etc. i've spaced mine to 126mm fine, looks like theres a bit more room there too. i've seen stuff on harris cyclery (sheldons place) that suggests as standard they come with a shorter axle though, they special-order ones with the longer axle although some places do swap them out themselves. i think.
