  • neither are any where as dangerous as a brakeless fixie with flat pedals.

  • and large spikes sticking out of the saddle

  • that is how boadicea would role on her fixed wheel.

  • dicki you just have to plan your braking a block ahead !! dry the surfaces out and grind slowly to a halt it's almost like riding brakeless but not quite
maybe time to get rid of the raleigh or fix it

i'm talking about situations where you don't have time to plan where and when you're going to stop.

  • I run SS, not fixed, with just a front brake. I use a cut down Avid SD7 lever which you can adjust how muich leverage you get, moving up or down the lever. I have it at the top which means the shortest pull for the most stopping on a sidepull. Its amazing, admittedly I'd use a rear brake if I had one but I really don't feel as if I need one, the stopping is literally the equivalent of an onld HS33 I have on my trials bike.

Plus it looks so sweet with no cables.

  • Mate of mine used to run a brakeless BMX round London, nutter. Mind you he worked in a shoe shop, so had a neverending supply of free 'brakes'

  • I ran my bike as a singlespeed with a front brake only for 4 or so months no problem. You get used to it, and I rarely ever used my rear brake on my old bike anyway. It was a hydra disc brake though, so the control and modulation was nice :) It's not dangerous, I don't think. You get used to it.

hippy DK: Why is rear brake at any time on fixed "madness"? It may be "somewhat redundant" but it's hardly loopy.

Yeah, I agree. Now I'm fixed I've got only a front brake still but what's wrong with two? I'm going to stick 2 on because I want to two brake hoods, and a dummy brake looks lame.

  • Praps a bit of a newbie question.

My mate reckons he has a fixed wheel that's also got a roller brake. But surely it can't be both... or am I missing something?

  • Sounds like a coaster braked wheel. It's not fixed if it coasts.

  • Your mate is wrong. Just doesn't make any sense :s

  • just as I thought can't coast while still fixed... have to look elsewhere for my bargain basement fix/ss

  • Kelvin, this is probably the best place to look for the best place to look for bargain basement fixie stuff : )

  • some one started a thread about fixed coaster brakes a while ago!

    probably possible but totally pointless

  • Sounds like a challenge to me!

  • x-post back to asm. Yeah I've got my eyes peeled in case anything comes up. fingers crossed eh
