The ones who write Vanilla appear not to be able to.
It was all my fault, I'd used renice to lower the priority of some of the system processes whilst I re-compiled the web server with a new module. When I finished I managed to knock MySql over and everything collapsed in a smelly heap.
Sometimes the house of cards that is the dependencies in server software all comes crashing down, oh well.
