Someone said Mosquito on Essex Road have them///

You generally can run a freewheel on the fixed threads; just really need to make sure theres enough thread engagement. Did this for a year or so on low quality fixed/fixed hub without any issue.
Not too sure if Phil wood do a QR release rear track hub. Phils have hollow axles but they're not designed for Q/Rs - have to get the right axle for the job
[Edit: See Scott not Scotts advice later - you just need to change the collar on a Phil wood track hub to the Q/R ones]
Two options:
Use Pitlock track nuts but I wouldn't rely on them if you're a skidder[Edit: Yep am a moron today - Phils bolt on, no need for nuts]
Speak to Phil Wood (can order direct from them) and either buy a replacement axle or order the hub you need through them (I'm sure they could easily do a Q/R compatible rear for you). -

Ok - just got I got stuck at work, so I took my wheels off and checked for you.
On the front I have a Phil Q/R road hub and on the back a Phil bolt-on track hub. The diameter of the hollow axle on these is definitely different. The bolt-on track has a much large diameter and is definitely not compatible with a Q/R as is.

Forgot you could just replace the collars rather than the axle on Phils - thats good advice Scott not Scott

Thanks for that, just emailed Sideways... Looks like I'm gonna have a redundant Pitlock skewer now, matching Pitlock track nuts it'll have to be!...
Whoulda thunk getting a simple single speed bike together could be this complicated? :-S -
• #9
scott not scot but are the pitlock tracknuts actually 'nuts'...or 'allen bolts'?....cos phils need bolts remember!
Can't get a very good look at them on the website, may have to try and scab some Phil QR collars from somewhere... Condor didn't have any QR hubs at all, all bolts, would've been easy to do a swapover if they had...

scott not scot I just emailed phil wood about the collars....because on his site he offers the conversion from bolt on track to QR for $30 per wheel.....but obviously we can't be sending wheels across the pond.....so i'm hoping he can sell me the collars seperately.
So, the QR collars'll just screw in the same way as the nuts do right?

I can actually answer something correct for once today.
The collard ends on the newer track hub are screwed onto the hollow axle. Can simple hold one and turn the other to remove (I'm sure though there are proper tools for the removal). Accidentally did this once when I was messing around. To get both off you'll need to be able to hold the axle steady - this may be best left to someone with the right tools (ie bench vise and axle block etc).
I'd assume the Q/R collars just then screw on the same way.
Only caveat here is that, having never replaced the bearings in my hub, I'm not too sure if there are any other steps (such as bearing pre-load) that need to be performed. I'd talk to Phil Wood first as there maybe a hidden gotcha here and they're very responsive (although the 8hrs time difference gets in the way).

This is making me think (never a good thing), if I'm gonna have to @rse around and buy a hub here then wait for another fortnight for the QR collars to show up from the US, I may as well save my cash and send my old Phil rear back to San Jose and get them to turn it into exactly what I need i.e. a single speed hub that'll give me correct chainline... This bike buildin' malarkey is SUCH a pain in the d!ck!

scott not scot if your hubs are still un-built then that might be best....
That's the annoying bit, wheels were bloody built last week! Grrrr! My own stoopid fault...
Just bought the new hub so should be riding the new machine by the weekend (with a bit of luck), old hub's goin' on the Bay...
Let me know how you get on with the QR collars (part no. etc), I couldn't find them on the Phil site and I'll be needing a pair too...
Thanks for all the help/advice... Again! :-D -

Unlikely, I know, but if you don't ask...
Anyone got a low flange 36h 130mm fixed/fixed or fixed/free Phil they wanna sell? Black or silver, QR or bolt... I'm (almost) past caring...
Condor sold me a 32h instead of a 36h... Unbelievable!?!?!? I didn't check the drilling, so I know I'm partly to blame, but d'fuk??? :-/ -

try hub jub online

Already been onto Will (and everyone else for that matter), not a single one to be had in the UK... It's a bit of a strange beast with the 130mm axle an' all...
Anyone know of a Euro distributor I can hit up before ordering direct from Phil? -
• #17
scott not scot not sure if they screw...probably just tap into the end of the bearing?.....not tried to remove one yet.....but they wont be hard cos there are no flats or holes for tools so it's gotta be simple to remove.
Hey Scott, my collars just turned up... Have yours come yet? Now I've got the QR bits but no hub!! Awesome... :-/
Don't remember a thread on the axle tho'... Hmmm... I'm sure Phil knows what he's doin'...

Only one way of finding out! Think the sales guy's name is Greg...
Still waiting for him to get back to me about a hub, hopefully he'll mark that as a 'commercial sample' too!
Quids in! Well, sort of... -
• #23
scott not scot i got an email back from the same guy a while ago....he said just tell him the hub width...etc...but cos i'm as broke as a fat kids tricycle i didn't do it....i was expecting the $30 per wheel....
you're like the woman with no legs that won the world strawberry picking championships!!!You mean Old Molly? That girl's a tiger! ;-)
If I get the hub order sorted with QR ends fited I won't need these, in which case you can have 'em!
Should find out in a day or two... :-D -

Hahaha... I'll be usin' that one... :)
Does anyone else in the UK apart from HubJub, Brixton Cycles and Condor sell Phil Wood hubs ? I need a 130mm silver 36h low flange fixed/free that'll take a Pitlock skewer ASAP but can't find one anywhere...
Also... If I buy a fixed/fixed version will the freewheel still go on OK? And... Just been up to Condor and tried one with the Pitlock skewer but the hole's much larger than the skewer so it rattles around inside the hub, will this make any difference once it's tightened? Condor guys couldn't tell me so I didn't part with my cash...
