dominiclincoln global warming swindle? I work in film and know how editing works. The smirnoff triple distiled advert ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLmn07BVNZc
) is a crude example, but it goes to show you can different stories with the same material. When you watch any tv, you'd be suprised how much gets cut out, according to the message you want to convey. A saying I heard ages ago goes 'that everything you see and hear in the news is true, apart from the stuff you were witness to'. Basically, unless you actually did the research, or were there in the edit suite / shoot its all complete and utter fabrication.
Personally I think it comes down to common sense, like when your elders would tell you not to be wasteful as a youngster. Same goes for now we're all grown up. Don't waste stuff, whether it be food, oil, petrol, energy, the planet, etc etc
i do some editing myself as well. once i had to cut something down from 45mins to 3. i came out totally different as to what it was supposed to be.
i also adhere to the don't waste stuff attitude myself. i once worked in a restaurant as a sub for a friend just to help out. it disgusts me so much how much stuff comes back into the kitchen untouched on the plates that goes straight into the bin. it hurts so much that i don't think i can work in catering at all anymore.
