there are many ways to clean those bars.
you could use sticky stuff remover.
or if its lots of crap aswell get a metal scourer(?) and get it all off and
then put oven cleaner on them and buff them up with wet and dry then polish them.
there is a tutorial somewhere on how to do that properly.
you could tape over? -
• #3
if you wanna get that dirty glue of the bars, use lighter fluid and an old rag, takes about 10 minutes and they came out looking like new. theres a previous post about this.
-
• #4
Tape?? What is this tape you speak of? Get those bars nice and shiny.
-
• #5
tapeless bars have the added bonus of being slippery in the rain, yes?
-
• #6
you getting other cranks? If you're gonna chuck those ones let me know...
-

it's a 3t with olympic logo and T.d.F 42 on it (tour de france model in olympic year?).
42cm wide!

yep. i am goin to chuck those cranks. amongst other things. ill take some pix and ill post it up for trade later on. if you help me remove them it's yours! (too tight to buy crank remover tool)

If you find a fixed rear wheel for it can you post up where cause i been lookin for a cheap fixed wheel 135mm spacing for ages and cant find the bugger anywhere.
-
• #10
cheap? what kind of language is that?
-
• #11
the language of unemployment!
-
• #12
hehe.. well you could try the old chinese dudes at brick lane market. I know someone got a pair of wheels and a few extras for 85 quid after a bit of haggling. They looked brand new, unbranded stuff though.
edit: they could be japanese.. old asian dudes then.

Conan, there is a pair of fixed wheels, with Surly hubs and 135 rear spacing on ebay at the minute.
Edit: You might want to double check they have reverse threading for a lockring though, I can't make out from the pics, and he only mentions SS.
Also, on-one do pretty cheap fixed 135 hubs.

dont they just put spacers and longer axles on 120mm ones? sjs does this i think for some of their hubs.
my frame's got 120mm rear so didnt have that problem.

update. almost there! respray by vaz turned out great. turned out a lot better than expected. no complaints whatsover on the quality of the finish...we'll see how long it'll last.
got everything else...all i need now is the crankset. and brakes.
took ages to remove the sticky stuff off, but found the bar's got loads of scratches (wonder how the previous owner managed to that!?)...if i file and sand the scratches off, would i be left with a gleaming silvery finish? anyone out there tried that?
-
• #17
just my tuppence, but I would leave the scratches, they weren't new bars to begin with, they have a history let it show (don't mean to get too grand designs there), the bars don't have to look perfect and new to look good.
nice paint job, green is such a cool colour -
• #18
go throught the grits, use wet&dry sandpaper. I would start at around 200grit, up to 1200grit. Then, to polish it, use metal polish and an old cloth.
-
• #19
wow that color looks really good! how many weeks did you leave it there? can you do a macro shot so we can see the quality of the paint up close? :)
-
• #20
yeah you musta been shitting yourself when roberto slagged him off. lol

hahaha...yeh u got that right! i was shttn myself. kiwicycles' paul saw the frame and thought it is one of vaz' better work...apparently vaz is one of the best in luglining.
ill take some close up pix tonight. metallic green was a last minute decision. wanted very light brown (almost beige) with choc brown panels. good thing i went for the green with off white. the lugs are lined with gold...
pretty good service. for little bit of extra he took out the gear bosses, cable guides and deraileur hanger and seized stem, bb and crank, headset. a lot of work for lazy folks like me. from drop off to pickup = 10days.
i get ya cornelius...wouldnt mind leaving some of the scratches on but some feel quite rough. thinkin of goin without bar tape for now.

• #22
looks great can't wait for the close ups
-
• #23
How much did u pay for all that work at Vaz.... I'm looking to do exactly the same. I'm not too bothered about quality, as it's for me beater, but just want a cleaner finish and no gear bosses etc.
-

£15 for removal of seized parts and griding/filing bits off...clean smooth finish
-

that looks sweet, i was looking to get my bike resprayed pretty much the way it is now, metalic purple with off white panels, i dont really want gold lugs, but do want some transfers put on the panels, it would be great to know how much u paid for the whole job, also it looks like one sweet ride.
hi. im one of many hovering around your forum for info. site's a goldmine for ideas!
just stripped the bike i got off ebay. cranks are still on though and a bolt for front brake seized! any ideas on how to loosen it? takin the frame to vaz finishes this saturday for a respray. he's taking out the cable guides and the gear bosses...might as well get him to drill/cut out the bolt.
here's the colour scheme im thinkin of going for
very pale olive green with brown panels (can vaz do pearlised?). brown saddle (hard to find charge spoon) and tape. gumwall tyres. frame's got nice lugs. should they be diff colour/lined? any ideas? chromed lugs and fork wouldve been nice...but cost puts em out of range. any suggestions on colour? still not sure bout brown (brown saddle's hard to find...b17 heavy and swift, swallow too expensive!)...same goes for brown tape.
got these bars with it.
what's the quickest way of cleaning it? or should i just not bother and just tape over it? would like to expose as much silver as possible though. it's a 3t with olympic logo and T.d.F 42 on it (tour de france model in olympic year?). only putting in one brake on the cross to keep the clean look
brand new wheelset coming in this friday. miche primato with mavic open sport. cant wait. just have to search for new crankset. prob stick to miche...cost spiralling out of control (but can still finish under £350...fingers crossed)
thanks to all contributors in this forum...been a great help
