If you're talking about quality, then sorry I have to disagree with that completely. 753 was top of the range tubing, that Plum probably had basic non-butted cro-mo. That's not to say a heavier tubing is not suitable for a track frame.

Obviously what prices thing get sold for varies at different times, places and buyers, and also where they're sold or how convenient it is to buy something, but that Plum auction is more a reflection of the current fashion for track bikes.

Sorry you're right, "cheaper than a new frame" would be more accurate. Because I think most buyer would actually get a new custom frame if it was only "a bit cheaper", unless it was something rare and collectible.

The tubing type isn't the be all and end all of a bike. Plum have more history behind them than Dooleys Cycles. Perhaps to the buyer they are more desirable because they're Belgian? I haven't even seen the Plum and have no idea of its construction - what makes you say it's non-butted cro-mo? Have you seen it before?

Yes I have seen it before, I've already mentioned it I saw the frame as a complete bike at a jumble, the ebay seller bought the bike there for £300.

He sent me pics - it's been resprayed single colour aqua green with some random Merckx decals - ugly as hell and they covered up the chrome stays! (not eye-candy, ride-candy)
Got a carbon Ahead fork on there - not original.
I found a similar but larger frame else I would have tried to haggle a bit more.
He wants 130 posted - it was posted on another (acf) forum back in May so he should be willing to reduce.
