  • Just a light girl's bike (not fixed) for my girlfriend, who is 5'8'' (Old peugeot or raleigh or whatever). Budget £100 plus or minus depending on the blah, blah. Anyone got one? Know a good second hand bike shop? I honestly can't stomach buying something from Brick Lane market. Apologies for the absolutely non-fixed nature of this post, though I am pumping money back into the impoverished fixed wheel community.... Thanks.

  • Gumtree or Ebay... can get them for 15£

  • yeah....a ton is alot of money if you just looking for an old skool peugeot beater.

  • Hi, there's a bloke who works at the bike shop on Hackney rd who is selling a white Raleigh frame about the right size though not a women's frame but the right size. Also a girl working at Brick Lane Bikes who's thinking of selling her ladies Peugeot frame. I would recommend the two old blokes on Brick Lane market, I picked up an '60s Carlton frame in great nick from there for £60. They often have great ladies bikes and they're not stolen.

  • but is it the right size?:)

  • May I suggest the humble boot sale. Yes, the majority of them are filled with future Trisha/Jeremey Kyle partcipants but they're also home to some awesome bike finds.

  • Yep. Carbolite Peugeot in good condition. Pearlised pale green racer. My girlfriends riding an old small mens Geoffrey Butler now so the Peugeots got to go. Rides nice. £50 if your interested. I'll try post a pic....

    ...
All good. Wheels are true, 700c, with slick wolber tyres.
    Only needs new bar tape.
Dropouts good for converting...just in case ;-)

  • hm.. I might take that if he's not interested? What's the height from BB to seat?

That's cool. I'll put up some measurements when I get home this eve. My girlfriend is 5'5 and rides this no prob. That's with seat at height in pic. Would suit 5'4 - 5'8 I reckon.

i have a bike girls bike you can have free, it is large but with a 5'8'' girl it might work.
the frame is a lugged raleigh 'wisp', 700c wheels, 5speed block on the back, single chainring up front.

  • There is a shop opposite brick lane bikes called 'Bad Bikes' or something.
Guy there has tonnes of old 'mixte' ladies bikes for between 60 and 90 quid.

  • That shop is crap. The concept seems to be take the shit bits of brick lane market and put it in a store. The bikes i've seen there always have a lovely coating of rust.

I'm sure he gets them off ebay for a tenner...

  • hence the name 'bad bikes'

  • Saw a nice peugeot in there last weekend.
    Maybe hit and miss.

  • runcible rakan
I'm sure he gets them off ebay for a tenner...

you don't get anything off ebay for a tenner these days!

  • I just bought my sister a run around bike. But I need to get some new wheels. Does anyone know whether 700c wheels will fit on a 26" wheel bike?

Is this still available as my other sister (I have 5 sisters!) wants a bike too. Do you live in London?

Yep if it is a mbt frame, I ve done that before with 27" wheels even. However the cants will not work so you will have to replace the brakes otherwise she will be breakless.

What brakes would I need to get? Do all brakes have the same length lever arms or do they differ? As you may have guessed im a no tehinical whizz.

  • they differ, you can make your own drop bolts

  • ohhh yeah first link !!

  • salmonchild yeah it can be collected from south east london. i would offer to ride it to a drop off but i'm too lazy to get public transport back.

won't be ready till the weekend as i'm going away and i need to put the bars and brakes back on, and you'll need a new chain if you want to turn it back to a 5speed (it can be ridden away, just as a singlespeed).

I live in Ipswich so 'dropping it off' is not an issue (though if you were Hippy or Lpg I would not be suprised if you insisted on dropping it off!) Will you be around Sunday?

  • Bikes still available if anyone's interested.
    53cm seat tube.
Pedal surface at lowest point to the top of the seat (lowest possible) is 29.5" - 30" ( the seat is curved up at back)
From floor to top of seat (lowest possible) is 33.5".
    £50
