Thanks all for your concern and musings.
I have patched the rim up and it seems to be holding. Put the bike back together today, even gave it a little wipe down and feel a whole lot better again !
I think most of south Londons roads are giant pot holes, I go over some that would shake your fillings on a full suspension downhill badboy. I blame Thames water and the cable companys' leaving the roads like patchwork quilts.
