  • Hi

First post here so hello everybody. Discovered this forum last week, a hive of info. Been off work with a fractured elbow(bike related at least) so its been a good distraction. Anyways, yesterday i found an old Bob Jackson frame. Dont know too much about these old ones and i only got to see it for a few mins but i think its reynolds 531, 70s or 80s, lugged, pretty good nick, no rust and its a 62cm which is cool. Its got a fork which the dude said had Campy ends (??), and think he said its got other Campy bits.

He wants £100 for it. Whats it worth? I'm not flush right now but i like it.

    Cheers

  • Sounds reasonable to me... IF its 531 & straight & no rust & got some campy components.

Others may have different ideas of what a reasonable price is.. finding a 60+cm frame is a little bit of mission.

Can you get some pics up here?

  • Is it a track bike or road bike. Do you want to convert it to fixed? What are the dropouts like?

  • Are we talking road or track frame? If its a track frame then its easily worth a 100 quid, if its in good nick.

Bob Jackson make really decent frames (probably even more so back in the day) and always seem to have a good reputation (built Hetchins and Merlin frames for a while).

See http://www.bobjacksoncycles.co.uk - new frames are around 300 quid and up.

  • If you don't want it.... I know a person who does

  • ^ me!

  • cheers guys,

its got backward horizontal dropouts if that makes sense, no pics yet. Was gonna go give the guy money for it today.
i wanna use it as fixed, but this other guy there said i'd destroy it. Surely not eh?

  • LIke these:

  • no other way, but they're nice

  • Oh, you meant that backwards.. horizontal dropouts:

  • hippy LIke these:

    Sweet, sweet track ends... Sigh...

  • aye, those ones, so its not proper track but its still good to fix, yes?

  • daveyc aye, those ones, so its not proper track but its still good to fix, yes?

    Yes.

  • right, well gonna go see the guy now and see what i can get it for,

someone just gave this away, i'm getting it from a bike charity in Edinburgh.

  • well, just checked the frame out. Its got campag dropouts, original brazed on, campag fork ends and headset, straight seat stays, 126wide. the guy says best thing is to send to mercian and get a wee dent on top tube sorted and the frame re enamelled, he reckoned prob 120-150 for this. But its nice and big, reynolds 531, so i think i'm sold for a ton.

But he also has this road trax(??) frame from the 50's or 60s. Nice lugged frame, he'd reckoned more suited to a fixed build, not track ends but horizontal. mine for 30. Anyone know of these?

  • How did you beat me to it?!

What size is the rotrax? I'll give you £35! ;-)

Serial number on the BB shell - first 2 digits will tell you the year of manufacture..

  • yeah its like those but no decals, needs enamelled too. but got the pump pins/thingys still on. Not original forks but rotrax in chrome
    its about a 58ish

  • provenrad How did you beat me to it?!

I'm quick on the draw and clever viz zee bikes. Keep trying, you'll get one soon. Promise :-)

  • Sadly Rotrax is too short for me...

Good luck with the Bob - do try and get £££s down a bit based on the dent etc.. perhaps even get a deal on both frames together?

I wonder why he didn't suggest sending it back to Bob J for repairs?!

  • well he's trying to say that Bob j is nothing like the company/guy it used to be, he also reckoned it wouldnt be suitable for a fix. seems to know a bit, but Bob j still make great custom frames but he werent convinced

  • anyone got experience of renovation/reenamel done by Bob jackson, or Mercian?

  • Mercian good.... Bob Jackson, not quite as good as Mercian

  • Gonna have to rename this the London & EDINBURGH FSS soon... Was it the Bike Station you got that from daveyc? Got to get down there sometime to try and find some stuff for an old Puch I got for my girlfriend.
